Bedford, VA, Lodge members presented a $1,000 Virginia Elks Association scholarship to Staunton River High School senior Cody Meadows (pictured).


In other news, the lodge sponsored ten girls to attend the Virginia Elks Youth Camp, the state major project.

Loudoun, VA, Lodge members honored the winners of their Americanism Essay Contest in ceremonies at the winners’ schools and gave each winner a certificate and a monetary award worth $100, $50, or $25 for first, second, or third place, respectively. The winners of the fifth- and sixth- grade division were Liberty Elemen- tary School student Tyler Bivins (first), Ashburn Elementary School student Michael Middleton (second), and Waterford Elementary School student Matthew Davison (third). The winners of the seventh- and eighth- grade division were Smart’s Mill Middle School students Daniella Matta (first), Katherine Avdellas (second), and Katy Hooper (third). In other news, lodge members distributed food boxes, each of which contained enough food to feed a family of four for a week, to fifteen needy families in the area.


Manassas, VA, and Woodbridge, VA, Lodges, with the help of scouts from Boy Scout Troop No. 1390, which is sponsored by the Woodbridge Lodge, held a Flag-Retirement Ceremony, retired 3 worn and damaged US flags,

and gave 23 more flags to the scouts to be retired at a future date.


Newport News, VA, Lodge members awarded $1,000 scholarships to students Jessica Fry, William Sharp, and Meaghan Shea.


North District, VA, lodges sponsored 52 boys and 53 girls to attend the Virginia Elks Youth Camp for a week of outdoor activities. In addition to sponsoring the children’s attendance at the camp, the lodges provided transportation to and from the camp and packed lunches for the children to eat on the bus.


Onancock, VA, Lodge members awarded the $1,000 Thomas C. Northam Memorial Scholarship to Broadwater Academy graduate James Turner. The lodge also awarded a $1,000 scholarship to one graduating student at each of seven other local high schools.


Petersburg, VA, Lodge hosted the lodge-sponsored Little League team for a baseball game, which the Little League team won, 4–0, and a picnic lunch.


Virginia Beach, VA, Lodge members presented Virginia Beach Mayor William Sessoms with their Citizen of the Year award during a patriotic ceremony that was held at Naval Air Station Oceana.


Virginia Elks Association donated more than $4,500 to the Pulaski


County Tornado Relief Fund to assist in rebuilding from the tornadoes that struck the area on April 8.


Woodbridge, VA, Lodge used a $1,000 ENF Gratitude Grant to donate $300 to lodge-sponsored Boy Scout Troop No. 1390 to help the scouts attend summer camp. The lodge also used the grant to donate $200 to the lodge’s Dictionary Project fund, $100 to the Dale City Little League, and $100 to the Virginia Elks Association’s Safety Glasses to School Students Program. The program is one of the state major projects and provides safety glasses to high school technical classes.


Battle Ground, WA, Lodge held a Golf Tournament fund-raiser, which featured a barbecue dinner and several raffles, and raised nearly $2,900 for local charities.


Lake City (Seattle), WA, Lodge members awarded a $1,500 scholar- ship to one local student and a $750 scholarship to another. Lodge mem- bers also awarded $50 savings bonds to the four winners of their American- ism Essay Contest.


Tacoma, WA, Lodge donated 20 gift cards worth a total of $500 to the Washington Army National Guard to be given to guardsmen’s families who are in need.


Wellsburg, WV, Lodge donated $500 to Franklin Primary School to support the school’s Reading Is Fundamental Program. ■
