Elks National Veterans Service Commission


Alaska State Elks Association, in cooperation with the Kenai River Professional Guides Association, held the fourth annual Wounded Veterans Fishing Event and treated more than 100 military personnel from Joint Base Elmendorf–Richardson in Anchorage and Fort Wainwright in Fairbanks to two days of fishing. Following the first day, the military personnel were treated to a banquet, and each of them was given a jacket and a cap. Following the second day, they were treated to a barbecue and given door prizes that included fishing trips, hunting trips, fishing and hunting gear, and tools. The Alaska State Elks Association contributed $10,000 toward the cost of the week- end’s activities.


Apache Junction, AZ, Lodge members organized the annual Memorial Day Ceremony at Mountain View Cem- etery in Mesa to pay tribute to the memory of America’s war dead. Lodge members placed flags on the graves of veterans before the ceremony and removed them afterward. Lodge members also coordinated the partici- pation of the four civic organizations that took part in the ceremony and arranged for a flyover of two WW II– era aircraft during the ceremony. Additionally, lodge members treated nearly 130 people to lunch following the ceremony.


Casa Grande Valley, AZ, Lodge, along with 19 other community organiza- tions, held a solemn Memorial Day

Moreno Valley, CA, Lodge held a Memorial Day Weekend Dinner and treated about 12 veterans and active-duty military personnel to a meal. The lodge also raised nearly $330 from the dinner for lodge veterans programs. In other news, lodge members took part in a solemn Memorial Day Ceremony by laying a wreath in honor of the US military personnel who gave their lives for their country.


Service at Mountain View Cemetery in Casa Grande to honor the men and women who had given their lives for the country. Lodge members placed a wreath during the ceremony, which about 500 people attended.


Gilbert, AZ, Lodge held a Memorial Day Breakfast at the lodge followed by a ceremony at the Gilbert Historical Museum’s Military Room. During the ceremony, a lodge member read out the names of the 129 troops with ties to Arizona who have died in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.


Green Valley, AZ, and Sahuarita, AZ, Lodge members participated in a Memorial Day Service at the Green


Valley Cemetery honoring America’s war dead. A member of each lodge laid a wreath in memory of the men and women who had given their lives for the country.


Sun City, AZ, Lodge members distrib- uted US flags to 800 veterans at the Phoenix VA medical facility and the Arizona State Veteran Home. In other news, lodge members visited the Arizona State Veteran Home and held bingo games for about 35 residents.


In more news, the lodge donated $6,000 worth of clothing, reading materials, and snacks to Central Arizona Shelter Services, a homeless shelter that counts about 135 veter-
