South Central Coast District, CA, lodge members honored Carlthorp School student Joe Levin in a ceremony at his school and presented him with a certificate and a $100 check for finishing third in the fifth- and sixth-grade division of the California-Hawaii Elks Association’s Americanism Essay Contest. Vacaville, CA, Lodge members participated in a Relay for Life fund- raising walk and raised $6,100 for the American Cancer Society. Lodge members also gave a cupcake, a birthday card, and a magnet to each person who participated in the walk and treated approximately 600 participants to breakfast.


In other news, lodge members gave 55 gift baskets and 85 handmade roses to senior citizens on Mother’s Day and gave 45 gifts consisting of a baseball cap filled with snacks to senior citizens on Father’s Day. The

Van Nuys-Reseda, CA, Lodge, with the help of members of the Antlers Program, held a Flag-Retirement Ceremony, respectfully disposed of one worn US flag and arranged for 13 additional worn and damaged US flags to be properly disposed of at a local crematorium.


In other news, lodge members honored the winners of their Hoop Shoot and Americanism Essay Contests in a ceremony at Lawrence Middle School. The event was at- tended by 800 people.


Vista, CA, Lodge members treated about 100 people, including US Marines from Echo Company, 3rd Amphibious Assault Battalion, 1st Marine Division and their family members, to lunch, games, and entertainment at the lodge. Following lunch and the entertainment, lodge members held a ceremony in which they officially began sponsoring the unit. Lodge members also presented unit leaders with a plaque, and the lodge offered to pay the first year’s membership dues for any eligible marine from the unit who became a lodge member. In other news, the lodge hosted 200 senior citizens from the community for a patriotic ceremony that was held at the lodge.
