introduced the next two extraordinary young people, the winners of the first- place, $60,000 ENF Most Valuable Student scholarships. The top male student, Chyi-Dean Shu, of Santa Ana, California, thanked the Elks in a

recorded video, since he was unable to attend the convention because he was teaching English to students in rural areas of Taiwan. Shu recalled his experience winning an Americanism Essay Contest in sixth grade and


expressed his hope that through his study of economics at Harvard, he would be able to help push green technology to the forefront of the national agenda. Christina Lulich, from Gatlinburg, Tennessee, then thanked the Elks for their help in sending her to the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, where she will study architecture. Thanks to her Elks scholarship, she also will be able to devote herself to helping others during her time there. She closed by repeat- ing her motto, which is a quote from Albert Einstein: “Only a life lived for others is worth living.”


As the final item on the agenda of the 2011 Grand Lodge Convention, Grand Exalted Ruler Carr swore in the district deputies for 2011–2012. After administering their oaths to them, he and the other new Grand Lodge officers formally closed the convention. ■
