On the final day of the convention,
the Elks honored five extraordinary young people. First to the podium were the winners of the Getty Powell Award for the highest-scoring boy and girl at the 2011 National Hoop Shoot Finals. The girls’ award was won by thirteen-year-old Kendal Cloninger, who was sponsored by the Gastonia, North Carolina, Lodge, and shot a perfect 25-for-25 in her third trip to the finals. The boys’ award went to nine-year-old Henry Westphal, who was sponsored by the Portland, Maine, Lodge. Henry not only hit all 25 of his shots, he also hit 39 of 40 shots in a shoot-off to edge out 11-year-old Jerrik Rydbom, who was sponsored by the Blairsville, Pennsylvania, Lodge, for the top honor.
Next to the podium was Maren McNee, who was introduced by Kent Gade, the director of the Drug Aware- ness Program. Gade turned over his time to the fifteen-year-old from Atlantic, Iowa, who was featured by newspapers and television news in her
