Fairless Hills, PA, Lodge members honored the memories of US Army SFC Bradley S. Bohle, US Navy CPO Richard Costelow, and US Navy CPO Eric F. Shellenberger during a patriotic ceremony at the lodge and presented the Elks Medal of Valor to their families to recognize their ultimate sacrifice.
East Stroudsburg, PA, Lodge hosted a Gold Award Ceremony for Girl Scouts Tracy Chopek, of Girl Scout Troop No. 350, and Corey Leight, of Girl Scout Troop No. 429, and presented each of them with a plaque, a framed certificate, and a US flag. For her Gold Award Project, Chopek created a wheelchair-accessible garden for residents of the Slate Belt Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Leight’s Gold Award Project consisted of supervising craft activities and games for children at the Pocono Area Transitional Housing facility for homeless families. In other news, the lodge held its annual Youth Banquet and treated 75 young people and family members to dinner. Following the dinner, lodge members awarded $1,000 scholarships to students Brandyn Bok of Pleasant Valley High School and Bethany Randall and Allen Sirolly of Stroudsburg High School. Lodge members also awarded the $1,000 A. Mitchell Palmer Scholarship to Stroudsburg High School student Jennifer Davidson and presented Stroudsburg High School student Jordan Phillips with a plaque naming him the lodge’s Teenager of the Year for his work at the Stroud Township Volunteer Fire Department. In more news, lodge members honored Patrick Ross as their Citizen of the Year in a ceremony at the lodge and presented him with a plaque in honor of his service as Chairman of the Monroe County United Way Campaign in 2010, as Chairman of the Council of Trustees of East Stroudsburg University, and his other contributions to charitable, civic, and educational causes. The lodge also, with the help of a $1,000 ENF Promise Grant, held a Picnic, treated 43 young people to games and refreshments, and awarded drug awareness basketballs and drug awareness soccer balls as prizes. Additionally, the lodge donated food for 40 needy people to the Stroudsburg Methodist Soup Kitchen, and lodge members and Antlers Program members prepared and served the food.
Sergeant First Class Bohle was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group when he died in Afghanistan on September 16, 2009. Chief Petty Officer Costelow was killed aboard the USS Cole when the ship was attacked by terrorists in Yemen on October 12, 2000. Chief Petty Officer Shellenberger was assigned to Seal Delivery Vehicle Team One, Naval Special Warfare Group 3, when he died in a training accident on May 7, 2009. In other news, the lodge held a scholarship awards ceremony and awarded the $1,000 Irvin F. Dost Scholarship to Cornwell-Egan Catholic High School graduate Megan Wallace, the $1,000 James H. Sharp Memorial Scholarship to Pennsbury High School graduate Katherine Fields, and the $1,000 James Ramsey Scholarship to Morrisville High School graduate Jon Franklin.
Oakmont, PA, Lodge donated a $1,000 ENF Gratitude Grant to the Riverview Athletic Association to purchase a portable public address system for use at area youth sports events. In more news, lodge members recognized the winners of their Americanism Essay Contest and awarded each of them a plaque and a savings bond. The winners at the fifth- and sixth-grade level were Charles Boehm Middle School student Alyson Farkas (first) and Holy Trinity Catholic School students Arianna Birnbrauer (second) and Ivy Atten- borough (third). The winners of the seventh- and eighth-grade division were Charles Boehm Middle School students Alyssa McGurrin (first) and Nathan Siegel (second) and Holy Trinity Catholic School student Nick Schwing (third). Alyson and Nathan each took first place in their respective age-groups in the district contest, while Alyssa won third place. Each of the district winners received a savings bond from the Southeast District.
