EW THINGS are as tasty with a cup of coffee in the morning as a doughnut still warm from the fryer. It seems like a great way to start your day. The scrumptious glaze melts in your mouth, and it’s so light and fluffy it’s hard to believe that it might not be good for you.

Unfortunately, doughnuts are low in protein and fiber and high in a number of the things people are often told to avoid, including fat, carbohydrates, and sugar. Ac- cording to the USDA National Nutrient Database, a medium yeast-leavened, glazed doughnut contains about 239 calories, 11.46 grams of total fat, 30.38 grams of carbohydrate, 11.71 grams of sugar, 1.3 grams of dietary fiber, and 3.73 grams of protein. By way of comparison, one cup of whole strawberries contains 46 calories, less than 1 gram of total fat, 11.06 grams of carbohydrate, 7.04 grams of sugar, 2.9 grams of dietary fiber, and less than 1 gram of protein.


There is almost no question that strawberries aren’t as good with a cup of coffee as a doughnut is, but with fewer calories and less fat, carbohydrates, and sugar, they are certainly a lot better for you—and they are

Donuts—it went on to become one of the icons of the doughnut industry. Mister Donut set up shop in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1955, and LaMar’s Donuts in Kansas City, Missouri, went into business in 1960. The age of the great American doughnut had arrived. By 1961, doughnut sales in the United States had reached an astounding $300 million (about $2.19 billion in today’s dollars).


Today, America’s love affair with


doughnuts goes on and on. We just can’t seem to get enough of these scrumptious, sweet treats. Despite new confectionary fads like designer cupcakes, the humble doughnut has persevered as a fundamental part of the American culinary landscape, a sugary reminder of a simpler—and some would say better—way of life.
