learn about human health and disease research on this exciting degree.

acquire the fundamental knowledge and skills you require to pursue biomedical research and careers in healthcare.

Why is this course for me? It will appeal to those with a keen interest in science and in how research and technology can impact on human health. You will learn how scientifically driven investigations can advance our knowledge of disease prevention, detection and treatment. Te programme will immerse you in modern medical and biological sciences, and focus on the application of scientific devel- opments. Te flexible, modular structure of this degree

allows you to specialise in the areas of investi- gative biomedical science that interest you, par- ticularly in the later stages of the degree.

What will I study? First Year

You will study the influence of science and medi- cine on society, taking key modules in: Anatomy • Physiology • Biochemistry • Cell Biology • Genetics

Second & Third Year You may focus on specific diseases and disease processes to learn more about the develop- ment of new, more effective means of diagnos- ing, treating and preventing illness. Supporting modules include: Biostatistics • Bioinformatics • Drug and Biomarker Discovery • Research Methods

Fourth Year You build skills in biomedical research through interactions and research rotations with inter- national researchers in a range of disease areas. Te degree will develop your fundamental knowledge in the translation of scientific dis- covery into clinical utilisation.

Career & Graduate Study Opportunities Typically, graduates will follow scientific careers in biomedical research, but they can also pursue opportunities in the pharmaceutical and bio- technology industries, and other areas allied to health.

Laura Slattery,

Jane Nobel STUDENTS

Te unique appeal of this degree was combining medi- cine and science to deliver the benefits of biomedical research to patients. Studying both subjects allowed us to focus on particular areas of interest, culminating in the completion of a final year research project.

We have used our scientific skills to address key emerging areas of human health and disease. For example, students in our year were placed with research groups in clinical research centres and the Conway Institute in UCD, and undertook research projects in areas as diverse as cancer biology, pulmonary fibrosis, multiple sclerosis and gastrointestinal disease. Tis gave us an insight into what a career in research would entail.
