Why UCD?

World-class education at one of the world’s leading

research-intensive universities

Lecturers and Professors who are at the cutting edge of their disciplines internationally

A curriculum that is constantly informed by the latest research and discoveries

Welcome from the President

Welcome to UCD. Whether you’re a sec- ondary school student, parent, teacher, guidance counsellor or are thinking of returning to education, I hope this pro- spectus will give you a flavour of the breadth of opportunities that awaits you at our University. Today UCD is a distinctively Irish uni-

versity but with global impact. Ranked among the world’s leading universities, UCD offers, first and foremost, a world class education delivered by lecturers and professors who are at the leading edge of their fields internationally. Importantly, our curriculum is constantly updated by the latest research and discoveries. Te unique UCD Horizons curriculum

draws inspiration from UCD’s founder, John Henry Newman, whose classic work “Te Idea of a University” is one of the most enduring texts on the value of a university education. In brief, UCD Horizons aims to provide students with educational depth, breadth and a global perspective. It demands that students acquire world-class expertise in their chosen discipline, be that philosophy, engineering or medicine. However, it also encourages and facilitates students seek-

ing education breadth through its elec- tive system. Te latter objective is further facilitated by the increasing number of UCD degree programmes (e.g. Medicine, Veterinary Medicine) that offer graduate entry routes in addition to the traditional school leaver entry pathway. Te UCD Horizons curriculum places the emphasis on learning rather than teaching. Te 21st century graduate will be expected to learn and in many cases reinvent him/herself multiple times throughout their career. Te graduates of today are increasingly

required to live and work across bounda- ries, borders and culture. To this end, UCD offers its Irish students an unparalleled array of opportunities to study abroad at some of the world’s top universities. Equally we pride ourselves in the inter- national mix of students on our main Belfield campus. UCD and Ireland provide international students with a wonderful lens through which to view Europe and the wider world. UCD offers a unique campus environ-

ment with world class degree programmes and research sitting side-by-side with a wonderful array of clubs, societies, sport- ing facilities, student residences and wood-

land walkways. University life should be a journey of academic and personal discov- ery and the UCD campus facilitates both. We encourage our students to “Learn

Today, Lead Tomorrow”; so many of UCD’s graduates have gone on to leadership posi- tions in Ireland and across the globe in academia, medicine, engineering, the arts, sports and politics. UCD graduates are con- sistently ranked highly by global employ- ers and enjoy excellent job prospects. At UCD we will prepare you for whatever

the future holds. We will give you the edu- cation and the skills you will need to meet the challenges and seize the opportunities of today’s more complex global society so that you can fulfil your true potential.

Dr Hugh R. Brady President, Uachtarán
