Choosing Information & Social Computing Information & Social Computing can be taken as part of a BA Joint Honours degree (DN500). It can also be taken part time (DN501). Check out the subjects you can study with Information & Social Computing by looking at the diagram on page 33. Details of how to apply for these combinations are on page 184. Information & Social Computing is also available as part of the UCD Bachelor of Social Science Degree (see page 64 for details).

Information and Social Computing gives you a chance to explore the influence and forms of information in all aspects of life – in busi- ness, government and society. In today’s digital world, the study of how to create, manage, share, find and use information is more relevant than ever before.

At the end of first year, students may opt to take a joint major or minor in Information and Social Computing, or take a major in Library and Information Studies, which leads to an entry- level library qualification recognised by the Library Association of Ireland.

I studied Information and Social Computing as part of my degree, then undertook an MSc in Marketing Practice. Since graduating, I have worked in the international division of Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, the second largest educational pub-


lishing company in the world. My role entailed creating and sharing marketing information about their educational software solutions, and also helping their international partners to adapt and localise this information to make it relevant for their culture and education systems. My most recent post is as International Marketing Officer at NUI Maynooth, where I manage all communications for the inter- national office, including social media.
