UCD Campus Life
New Student Orientation To help you settle into life at UCD, we organise a timetable of events known as New Student Orientation for all incoming new students. Tis takes place the week before the academic year begins and it is a special week for new students only. It is designed to help you find your way in UCD.
What happens during Orientation? A You have the opportunity to make new friends and get to know people.
A You get the chance to meet your UCD Orientation Guides and Peer Mentors (current UCD students), who will show you around campus, introduce you to your classmates and help you get settled into life at UCD.
A As you have probably already registered online for your degree programme, Orientation week gives you the opportunity to receive academic advice to help you finalise your choice of modules so you have your timetable in place before the first day of lectures.
A You collect your UCD student card (required for accessing the library and other on- campus services).
Your UCD experience is defined by what you put into it, so join this challenging, exciting and stimulating environment and be a part of our UCD community.
KEY FAC T The key to UCD’s Journey of Discovery is developing a wider, holistic experience for our students, beyond a solely academic education.
Getting oriented at UCD
Life at university is not just about lectures and study. Tere is so much more to being at UCD. You will find that the sports, societies and social life are vital and exciting ingredients of your wider university experience.
A key part of Orientation is the scarving ceremony with the President, when each student is given a scarf in the university colours – representing the beginning of your journey as a UCD student.
A We introduce you to all the student services at UCD and what they offer you: from student advisers to the sports centre and the crèche.
A You visit the Students’ Union tent to learn about its services and activities.
A Finally, you attend the President’s Welcome Ceremony to officially mark the start to your UCD career!
Te best part of Orientation is that it’s fun! Annual Orientation traditions include mov- ies, sports tournaments, DJ and band nights in the Student Club, scavenger hunts, the Orientation Céilí and Barbecue. Tere are also special Orientation meetings hosted by the International Office, New ERA, the Disability Support Service, Chaplaincy, the Mature Students Adviser and the Applied Language Centre. Tese are also followed by other events and information sessions during the first semes- ter to assist students to settle into college. Two of the most important things to do during
Orientation week are to say ‘Hello’ to other new students and to get involved in all the activities.
new students a great kick- start to their college life by introducing them to UCD with a friendly, helpful smile, and offering them a chance to immediately make new friends.
“ Orientation gives Paddy Ryan, Engineering ” b“ Orientation is great ecause it gives you a
chance to talk to people who’ve gone through it all before. It’s great if you’re from the country and your guide is too. You think ‘Hey, they managed to survive up in the Big Smoke. It can’t be too bad!
Rachel Chall, Medicine ”
Orientation because when I was a first-year I found it difficult coming to university. I wanted to be able to help new first-years gain a real experience of what UCD is really like. Louise Nic Aodhbhuí, Arts
“ I helped out with ” “Orientation was great
because it gave us a chance to help first- years settle in and also provide information about university life that they may not have thought to ask.
