(c) ‘HEAR’ Higher Education Access Route
Te Higher Education Access Route (HEAR) is a third level admissions scheme for school leavers from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds. HEAR has been established by a number of Higher Education Institutions based on clear evidence that socio-economic disadvan- tage has a negative impact on educational achievement at school and progression to higher education.
School leavers who provide satisfactory evidence relating to their socio-economic circumstances and meet the Irish Leaving Certificate matriculation /minimum entry and subject requirements are eligible to compete for a quota of places allocated to applicants on a reduced points basis in UCD.
Who should apply to HEAR?
HEAR is for school leavers (under 23 years old as of 1 January 2012). How to apply to HEAR?
STEP 1 Apply online to CAO by 17:15 on 1 February 2012.
STEP 2 Indicate that you wish to apply to HEAR and finalise all elements of your HEAR online application by 17:15 on 1 March 2012.
STEP 3 Submit relevant evidence in support of your application to arrive at CAO by 17:15 on 1 April 2012.
HEAR applications can only be made online at
www.cao.ie.
More information on HEAR is available from your school Guidance Counsellor or the UCD Access Centre. Information can also be found on:
www.accesscollege.ie,
www.cao.ie and
www.ucd.ie/access.
Students who accept places in UCD through HEAR must attend a compulsory orientation programme. HEAR students are offered a variety of academic, per- sonal and social supports while studying at third level. Details of post-admission supports for HEAR entrants can also be found on:
www.accesscollege.ie and
www.ucd.ie/access.
8. Additional Regulations (a) Deferred Entry
Applicants who have been offered a place and who wish to defer entry for a year should follow the procedure below. Please note that it is not always possible to defer entry.
Once you receive your CAO Offer Notice:
1. Do NOT accept the offer in the manner shown on the Offer Notice.
2. Write IMMEDIATELY to Admissions, UCD Registry, Belfield, Dublin 4 (or email
admissions@ucd.ie), setting out the reason(s) for the request.
3. Te letter or email must arrive in UCD Registry Admissions at least two days before the Reply Date shown on the Offer Notice. NB: for your security, emails will only be accepted if they are from the email address on file from CAO.
4. Te letter/email must include your name, CAO application number and programme code.
5. UCD will communicate the decision to you.
6. In order to take up the deferred place, you must re-apply through the CAO by 1 February of the following year, placing the deferred programme as the first and only preference. (It is possible to delay application until 1 May on payment of the late application fee.)
Applicants who have been given permis- sion to defer entry must not in the inter- vening year:
A Attend a third-level institution, or
A Repeat the Leaving Certificate examination with the intention of applying for a different third-level programme.
If you do so, the deferral will lapse and you will then compete for a place in the normal way.
Applicants who have accepted a place and subsequently wish to defer may request a deferral as above. However, after 1 October, such requests are considered on serious medical grounds only (as it is then too late to offer the place to anyone else).
(b) Applicants Who Have Previously Attended Third Level
Full details are available at
www.ucd.ie/myucd/transfer.
(i) Application for Stage 1 of Programmes
Applications for Stage 1 of all undergraduate degree programmes must be made via the CAO and comply with CAO regulations (except non-EU and UCD students wishing to repeat a year). Applicants must declare previous third-level attendance on the CAO form, whether examinations were completed or not.
Failure to declare previous third- level attendance could result in an application being invalidated.
Previous third-level attendance may affect your fees status. See
www.ucd.ie/fees for details.
