Why is this course for me? It is predicted that the Irish dairy industry will undergo significant change over the coming years, with a contraction in dairy farm num- bers but significant expansion in farm and herd size. Tis will be accelerated by the abolition of the dairy quota in 2015. Tis programme is designed to equip future leaders in the dairy industry with the necessary scientific, technical and business skills to cope with this business and enterprise expansion.


What will I study? First & Second Year


You start with a range of business, science, mathematics and technology-related modules. You then build on this scientific base by taking a range of modules in relevant applied sciences, as well as business and communications-related modules.

Third & Fourth Year You undertake technical management of a dairy farm at Teagasc, Kildalton Agricultural College commencing from June of third year, before starting your professional work expe- rience placement. Modules undertaken at Teagasc Moorepark include: Grassland Management • Applied Dairy Cow Nutrition • Dairy Systems • Herd Health In fourth year you will consolidate your under- standing of earlier modules and pursue a range of business and science modules.

In secondary school I was interested in agriculture, busi- ness and dairying, so the Dairy Business degree at UCD was an obvious choice. I definitely made the correct decision. Dairy Business is a relatively new degree programme and the


combination of science, business, technical and practical-based modules contribute to a very dynamic and innovative syllabus. I have really enjoyed the last two years. Staff members are very supportive and the relatively small num- bers of students on the programme contribute to a great learning environment. Tere is lots of industry excitement about this degree and I expect the first graduates of the programme to have lots of employment opportunities.
