Third & Fourth Year Completes the study of organ systems in health and disease with a clinically integrated approach and clinical attachments in hospitals.

Sample topics include: Pathology • Microbiology • Pharmacology • Neurosciences • Clinical Diagnosis & Terapeutics • Respiratory Diseases

Fifth & Sixth Year Involves periods of clinical attachments in general and specialist hospitals, attachment to general practice and instruction in the various medical specialties. Clinical tuition is patient- centred and largely carried out through small group sessions at the bedside. A clinical elective is offered and can be completed almost any- where in the world.

Modular programmes include: Medicine • Surgery • Obstetrics & Gynaecology • Paediatrics • Psychiatry • General Practice & Community Medicine • Legal Medicine • Public Health Medicine

Prior to graduation, students take an innova- tive and progressive Professional Completion module that includes intern-shadowing, emer- gency-skills training and an intensive review of medical practice that challenges you to apply what you have learned throughout the medical curriculum to patient care.

Career & Graduate Study Opportunities Upon graduation, you must complete one year as an intern to gain full registration with the Irish Medical Council. You may then pursue training towards a career in a wide variety of specialties, in a diversity of settings, including hospitals and primary care facilities, or laboratory-based diagnosis and research. For more information on the Internship Application process and eligi- bility to apply, please visit www.hse.ie.

International Study Opportunities Extensive international links offer you a vari- ety of opportunities to widen your experience. Summer elective scholarships, awarded on the basis of an essay competition, are available to support some elective periods in international centres which currently include: A University of Pennsylvania, USA

A University of California, USA A Emory University, USA

A Penang Medical College, Malaysia, to name but a few.

Research Opportunities You can pursue credit-bearing summer research with our laboratory and clinical partners, and, uniquely, with a wide variety of charitable organisations that we work with. Students who see themselves as the clinical leaders of the future may also pursue an intercalated Master of Science (MSc), which means they take a year out of the Medical programme to pursue a research master’s in medical science.

When I started Medicine, to say I was nervous was the under- statement of the century. Today I’ve met more people than I

could ever hope to remember, travelled to more countries on the back of Medicine than I can count on two hands, and been Auditor of the UCD Medical Society. Medicine is a true call- ing, one with many opportuni- ties and rewards. It’s a chance to make an impact on the lives of your patients and co-workers. You have instant trust and, as such, instant responsibility and this is what makes it probably the most rewarding and gratify- ing profession of all. I’ve never looked back. All you can do is look forward to the best career you could ever choose!
