Why is this course for me? Civil Engineering deals with the design, con- struction and maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment and it includes the design of bridges, buildings, roads and dams and works relating to management of our water resources. Te work of civil engineers is evident all around us and their contribution to society is huge. Tis work incorporates environmental protection; large-scale construction projects; ensuring the provision of safe drinking water; designing and implementing strategies for treat- ing wastewater and pollutants; development of transport infrastructure; flood prevention; and the analysis of foundations for different ground conditions. Skills for meeting these requirements are
developed in UCD Civil Engineering, in core areas of structural design, water and environ- mental engineering, transport and geotechnical (foundation) engineering.
What will I study? First Year

I studied maths and physics with chemistry at secondary school. I chose Engineering at UCD as it has a great reputa- tion. Te first two years consist mainly of lectures and labs, while the last two years are more demanding and involve much more project-based learning with a lot of team-
work. My favourite aspect of the course was the research project. I always knew that I wanted to study abroad as part of my degree and UCD gave me this opportunity. During third year I studied at the University of Connecticut, USA, before doing an internship in Chicago for the summer. Te experience was unforgettable and has undoubtedly broadened my perspectives as a future civil engineer.
