4 UCD Horizons

Te UCD Horizons undergraduate curriculum is nationally and internationally recognised as a visionary structural reform with great potential. Te June 2011 Irish Universities Quality Board report* commended UCD for “its visionary approach to education that aims to prepare students to play a role as Irish and global citizens”.

The Idea of a University UCD Horizons draws inspiration from the educational philosophy of John Henry Newman, the University’s founder. His 1852 Dublin lectures, later published as Part 1 of the classic text ‘Te Idea of a University’, are the founding blocks of UCD’s commitment to the ideals of building a thriving, prosperous nation and preserving and transmitting its heritage. Our approach to education draws upon

this founding vision. It builds on UCD’s distinct identity as Ireland’s largest and most diverse research university. We bring together a wider range of academic disciplines than any other university on the island and complement this with the diversity of our staff and students. UCD’s strengths include the richness and variety of our educational offerings and their solid foundation in research and scholarship. Te versatility of intellect espoused by

Newman is exemplified in the flagship UCD Horizons programme.

The Breadth of Education Education is about individuals, about you. With UCD Horizons you can adapt the cur- riculum to your individual needs. Our core programme gives you the

opportunity to excel in your chosen disci- pline or profession. We then give you the choice either to broaden your knowledge by exploring new areas that are differ- ent to your primary area of study, or to study aspects of your programme in more depth. Te UCD experience aims to be a holistic

journey of discovery, where you are given every possible encouragement and sup- port to achieve your full potential, in both your academic and personal life. UCD’s undergraduate programmes are taught by world leaders in their field and are based on the latest scholarship and research.

As well as academically excellent, the UCD experience is internationally and culturally diverse. While distinctly Irish, UCD today has a truly global outlook, with thousands of students and faculty from diverse cultures and backgrounds, and a range of opportunities to study and learn abroad with our many international partner universities, preparing you for work and life in different cultures and environments.

A Visionary Approach to Learning Te UCD Horizons undergraduate cur- riculum underpins cutting edge learning, and is nationally and internationally rec- ognised as a visionary structural reform with great potential. *Te June 2011 report from the Irish

Universities Quality Board (IUQB) review of UCD, conducted as part of its Institutional Review of Irish Universities (IRIU) process, commended UCD for “its visionary approach to education that aims to prepare students to play a role as Irish and global citizens”. Te report also com- mended UCD on “its increased prioritisation of teaching and learning …its strong quality ethos” and “its dynamism and forward-look- ing approach to education and research”. UCD, uniquely in Ireland, has an edu-

cational research programme where aca- demics with excellent teaching skills and expertise have been appointed at University

level to develop new and exciting ways to make First Year University Learning more relevant, useful and interesting for you. Some examples of our innovative teaching and learning developments, a number of which are particularly relevant to our new first year students, include:

A Te establishment of a Drop-in Writing Centre in the College of Arts & Celtic Studies to assist you in developing and extending your academic writing skills;

A A Creativity in Design module for all Engineering students, an active learning experience, where you will be focussed on developing problem-solving, team-working, prototyping, visual representation and communication skills;

A Enquiry-based learning modules in English, and Geography, where you will be working actively in groups to solve and present answers to key problems in these subjects;

A A national award-winning Computer Science in Practice module which uses a high level of employer input to help students learn more about the careers open to them, the labour market and the skills employers look for.

Whichever programme you choose, you can be sure that you, as a student and a graduate, will be at the cutting edge.
