Physics with Astronomy & Space Science

develop practical skills by learning how to design a satellite or make astronomical observations using a variety of telescopes.
Why is this course for me? Tis is primarily a Physics degree programme, with an emphasis on the applications of physics in astrophysics and space science. Students will gain an understanding of how ground-based and space-based technologies are used to explore the universe and how modern science can be used to understand it. Astronomers pursue knowl- edge and understanding of the underlying proc- esses at work in the universe through physics. Physics, in its broadest sense, is the study of the fundamental laws and forces that shape the nat- ural world. Te core of the degree programme is therefore an Institute of Physics-accredited honours BSc qualification in Physics.
What will I study? Tere is a substantial emphasis on gaining hands-on experience in astronomical techniques and on teamwork projects. Students have access to UCD’s robotic telescope in South Africa. Tis is a sample pathway for a degree in Physics with Astronomy and Space Science.

Students can also apply for ESA summer internships) • Elective modules Fourth Year Physics with Astronomy and Space Science (Students either participate in a week-long mission-design workshop at the University of La Laguna in Tenerife, or they undertake astronomical observations at Tenerife’s Teide Observatory.)

(NASA and ESA), medical physics, meteorology, energy technology sector, IT industry, financial sector, geoscience and Semi-state bodies. Graduates may apply for MSc programmes in
Nanobio Science, Medical Physics, Meteorology or for PhD programmes in Ireland and abroad in diverse areas such as radiation physics, atomic physics, particle physics and astrophysics.
International Study Opportunities Students have accepted places at the University of California, San Jose, and in Melbourne, Australia.

Ever since I was 12, I’ve been completely enthralled by Astronomy and Space Science, and I took Physics, Chemistry and Honours Maths in second- ary school. My favourite subject at the moment is ‘Exploring the Solar System,’ which delves into
modern and past space missions and teaches the scientific principles allowing them to take place. When I graduate I want to do a PhD and then eventually work on planning space missions for NASA. Lecturers are so keen to help with any queries and the Physics block hosts such a friendly atmosphere.
