Why is this course for me? Plant Biology is the scientific study of plants, fungi and algae. Plants are vital for supporting and maintaining the atmospheric and envi- ronmental conditions required for all life on Earth. Tey are also the mainstay of human and animal diets, while also providing pharmaceu- ticals, timber, paper and clothing. Plants are being exploited as sources of renewable energy and biofuels, and make an important contribu- tion to measures aimed at reducing the effects of climate change. A key to the further develop- ment of plants for practical or economic use is an improved understanding of metabolic and developmental processes and their interactions with environmental factors.


What will I study? Tis is a sample pathway for a degree in Plant Biology. Topics include plant biotechnology, applied plant biology, marine botany, genetics and systems ecology.

I grew up on a nursery run by my parents and always had an interest in plants. I studied Horticulture in the Institute of Technology Blanchardstown, and then applied for Science in UCD. Subjects I am currently studying include Systems Ecology, Marine


Botany, Plant Biotechnology, Plant Growth and Nutrients and Diversity of Plant Form and Function. Studying botany after studying horticulture will give me a more in-depth knowl- edge of how plants grow and interact with their environment. After finishing my degree I would like to work as a horticulturist or a plant and environmental scientist.
