MACRO HEADWINDS IMPACTING MEDIATECH BY DAVID WOOD
The latest research from the IABM reveals that macroeconomic headwinds are having a clear impact on MediaTech business models. Speaking at the IBC Conference session ‘IABM – Key drivers of change in 2023 and beyond’, Lorenzo Zanni gave delegates a data-driven analysis of MediaTech investment patterns and said that it was the most important factor affecting businesses in the sector today. He noted that macro headwinds may tilt the balance in favour of outsourcing for many MediaTech businesses. Panellist Jade Kurain, President and Co-founder, Iatakoo, which provides end-to-end business solutions for broadcast, agreed that macro headwinds were important factors affecting her

Alex Wilkinson, Head of Sales and Marketing, EMEA, at Accedo TV, said service optimisation to ensure lower cost of ownership and sustainability are among the key trends at IBC this year. “There’s defi nitely a move towards optimisation of cost, and that comes in the natural arc from SVOD services particularly trying to get lots and lots of subscribers, and then trying to retain those subscribers, and ultimately cutting costs,” he said. Accedo now offers a service called Healthcheck, a specialist consultancy designed to assess the performance and viewing experience of streaming services, and providing insights to help improve them. Launched earlier in 2023, it is promoting the service for the fi rst time at IBC. “Churn is an issue,” commented
Wilkinson. “Our aim with Healthcheck is to ensure that the service has the best user experience.”
with macro headwinds. “We are not in a recession but there is a slowdown,” she said. “The fi ndings in the IABM report make sense for us; we are also seeing that the business models are changing.” “We have seen a deceleration in cloud investment compared to the previous year,” added Zanni. The IABM report also indicates that the Hollywood strike is set
research by IABM, shows that business confi dence has increased since 2020, but it suffered a slight decrease in 2023 compared to 2022. Other key topics on the minds of MediaTech businesses include business slowdown, growth, supply chain issues and streaming maturity.
Cloud, virtualisation, OTT and
streaming continue to be top priorities.
Analysis of research on training and support shows that a talent shortage is also affecting businesses. “Some 61% of the businesses surveyed said it was more diffi cult to recruit talent because of this shortage,” Zanni noted.

Accedo has also launched new criteria targeting sustainability in its Accedo One Marketplace. The offering enables video service providers to make buying decisions based not only on product features, but also on sustainable KPIs to cover carbon emissions reduction, audience infl uence and community impact. “Everyone can do more” to drive a more sustainable industry, Wilkinson said. “As an organisation we try to be sustainable ourselves, but we also try and promote sustainability among our partners.” 5.F40
Video ingest specialist Cinedeck is adopting an increasingly fl exible approach to how it provides its services in order to help customers manage their budgets more effectively. James Cranfi eld, VP Sales, EMEA and APAC at Cinedeck, noted that the software-only version of its ingest server, called CD2, has really taken off since it was launched over a year ago. “People want that fl exibility
around being able to install it on their own hardware,” he said. CD2 offers the same features as the full range of Cinedeck ingest servers. The company now also offers customers the ability to lease the software for a one-off production, and then offset the cost of the rental if they decide to purchase the software or hardware at a later date.
Cranfi eld: People want fl exibility
Cranfi eld said many teams “don’t know when they’re going to get their next production, so they don’t really have the option of spending hundreds of thousands of pounds on an ingest solution”. At this year’s IBC, Cinedeck is launching new features for its CD2 ingest software, aimed at streamlining multichannel production workfl ows. Live Logger, Live Replay and the Broadcast Control app are all being demonstrated in Hall 5. It is also showcasing the
recently launched ConneX, described as a fl exible and scalable media processing platform. 5.H27
