IBC2023 ACCELERATORS: GALLERY AGNOSTIC LIVE MEDIA PRODUCTION


AND AUTHENTICATED DATA STANDARD


Two IBC Accelerator projects will be presented on the Innovation Stage in Hall 3 today: Gallery Agnostic Live Media Production and Authenticated Data Standard. Live media production workfl ows have seen a world of advancements via device-agnostic, gallery-agnostic and hybrid ways of working. Gallery Agnostic Live Media Production has stepped up to the challenge to explore this topical advancement in-depth, considering both on-prem and cloud devices. The project, a collaboration between Participants Grass Valley, Tinkerlist, Singular.live, Zixi and Techex; and Champions ITN, YLE and the BBC, places a core focus on the fast-paced pressures of live-to-air. “The agnostic approach to live production, including devices, galleries or hybrid (on prem and in the cloud or a mix between the two), aims to make live content production easy, fl exible and adaptable,” says Mark Smith, IBC Accelerator Innovation Co-Lead. “This is why this Accelerator caught the attention of world-leading news production and broadcast champions as well as the support of stellar vendor participants, who are all passionate about experimenting with radical new workfl ows in real- world live production use cases.” The project’s objectives demonstrate why


live production needs to be more gallery and device agnostic, and why this will then help broadcasters adapt to budgets, technical possibilities and a variety of circumstances, such as a sudden change in venue or location. It aims to empower producers and editors


to control a variety of devices and tech stacks from one common interface, allowing for easy adaption to venue changes or OB truck interfaces, while helping producers adapt to different budgets and types of show. The POC plan is to run a live event on location, a full automated studio (switching between on-prem and cloud), while applying this workfl ow to both a fully professional Tier 1 equipped broadcast facility, as well as a lower end podcast/YouTube set-up. Standard project is championed by ITV, and the Participants come from Fabric, Flomenco, The Entertainment Identifi er Registry Association, Amazon via IMDb and The Language Metadata Table community. works its way through the entertainment data landscape, it becomes augmented and the original quality, messaging and intent becomes compromised.


This is why the industry needs Authenticated Data Standard, which will allow content owners to verify and authenticate their content data and imagery – and publish it to third-party sources.

Andrew Holland, VP Data Services at Fabric, who put the original idea proposal together, says: “Gaps can be replaced with slightly dodgy crowdsourced data of unknown provenance. In essence, over time it can become a little bit messy and the data can be compromised.” Holland describes the broad background of the project team: “Our Accelerator team includes content creators, metadata management specialists, and metadata aggregators and distributors – encompassing the entire landscape of media metadata. This wide combination of expertise has provided us with a holistic understanding of the overall process, enabling us to solve the challenges and deliver a solution that can benefi t the wider industry.” On what can be expected from today’s session on the Innovation Stage, Holland says: “We have


created a host of documentation and use cases that will allow the ADS to be adopted by a wide variety of different users, from content creators and distributors, metadata managers, metadata aggregators and distributors to metadata content management platforms and metadata consumers such as retailers and broadcasters. “Today we will be showcasing the process


whereby a user can register as a certifi ed ‘publisher’, and go on to create, amend, augment and authenticate their metadata records, which will then be published and displayed as ‘authenticated’ on third-party metadata distribution sites.”


He continues: “For a while we have been


aware that one of the obstacles that is slowing things down is the lack of a universal metadata delivery standard, meaning that huge amounts of time are wasted confi guring deliveries to bespoke formats for each client. We realised that we could potentially improve this situation, while simultaneously improving and authenticating metadata at the same time. As a company that stores, manages and supplies media metadata, anything we can do to improve the quality, delivery and interoperability of data for us, our clients, and the wider industry, is a great benefi t.”


Gallery Agnostic Live Media Production takes place today from 10:45-11:45 on the Innovation Stage in Hall 3. It is followed by Authenticated Data Standard at 13:30-14:30.
