ASIA PACIFIC: EVER RICH DUTY FREE
tensions appear to have cooled on THAAD, although it remains to be seen whether the radar technology will be scaled back in its use or removed altogether. Certainly on the face of it, Chinese
tourism has rebounded since the beginning of this year. Chinese visitor arrivals to South
Korea grew by 46% to 410,337, according to the most recent July figures [correct at the time of publication], released by the Korea Tourism Organization. This continues an upward trend
that most recently yielded growth of +46% in May and +49% in June. The figures spell good news for
global travel retail, but Ever Rich Duty Free nonetheless continues to reap the rewards from cross-strait traffic. “The purchasing power of
Chinese consumers is still no doubt the strongest and increasing,” comments the spokesperson. He believes Chinese numbers to
Taiwan will grow in the near future, but in the same breath he makes clear that travel retailers should not rely on any one customer grouping.
Kinmen FITs boost For Ever Rich, this reliance is being offset by healthy demand across the purchasing categories from Taiwanese, Japanese, South Korean and South East Asian travellers. In general, fashion, cosmetics and Taiwanese
speciality
goods rank as the top three most popular categories. The firm’s footprint extends
across airport, downtown and online channels in Taiwan. Its airport stronghold is at Taoyuan
Airport, but it also has a presence at Taipei’s Kaohsiung and Songshan International Airports, plus at Taichung International Airport and Hualien Airport. Downtown, it has a well-
established presence in Neihu and Minquan. In 2015, Ever Rich opened its five-star hotel Golden lake Hotel on Greater Kinmen Island, following the launch of its Ever Rich Golden Lake Plaza downtown duty free store the year previous. Chinese traffic to Kinmen was given a substantial shot in the arm

following the introduction of a landing visa policy (effective January 2015) permitting residents from 36 mainland China cities to travel independently to Kinmen. This year, ‘political and external
factors’ have challenged Chinese tourism growth to the island, says Every Rich, but the structure of those tourists has resulted in a change in spending habits. “There are obviously more
millennials who have almost become the world’s biggest spenders, like in Kinmen,” he observes. “We have also observed that the portion of independent travellers is getting higher, all these changes are believed to have positively impacted the market.”
Extending appeal in Penghu In more recent news, Ever Rich soft-opened its long-awaited duty free shopping resort in Penghu, an archipelago of clustered islands situated in the Taiwan Strait. Approximately 27,000sq m of duty
free and travel retail shopping facilities are among the chief attractions at the Discovery Hotel and Profond Pier No. 3 Shopping Plaza. Visitors departing directly overseas
from Penghu can purchase goods in the international duty free shop, while Taiwanese residents and others returning to Taiwan are able to purchase from a separate domestic

duty free shop. The Profond Pier boasts more
than 100 domestic and international brands, including fashion, perfume & cosmetics, liquor & tobacco, accessories & jewellery plus specialist categories. Spring and summer are the peak
tourism seasons, but extending the appeal during the autumn and winter is a task Ever Rich is currently focusing on. “This autumn, we work on
diversifying leisure and sports facilities and activities,” says the spokesperson, who highlights Penghu’s role in hosting events such as this October’s ‘Carnival of the Most Beautiful Bays in the World’. Ever Rich is confident in the future,
noting that the rise in global low-cost carriers offers an opportunity for airport companies and travel retailers to bolster customer service. “The environment and industry
is changing fast, which results in many external challenges, but understanding the challenges are potential opportunities,” concludes the spokesperson. «
