TRBusiness embarks on historical voyage...


This year, the company notches up another milestone achievement, with the printing of its 20th Top 10 International Operators Report. This remains an indispensable reference document for the industry for an entire year. [TRBusiness celebrated the 20th anniversary of the company last year]. However, it was our mission this year


to compile an even bigger and better report and one befitting its special two-decade birthday...so that’s what we did. This year’s report also cried out for some direct comparisons with


the very first Top 10 International Operators report; no mean feat when you consider all that has happened in the intervening years. But what at first appeared to be a daunting task, turned into a real voyage of re-discovery. What became immediately apparent upon compiling this year’s


report was how the industry has increasingly condensed over the last 20 years while – at the same time – expanded. It has extended its reach to an infinite number of territories,


through many different channels, supplying products in a whole host of new and niche categories. However, consolidation has also seen the industry become a lot


smaller in many ways, with some hailing the evolution as positive, while others have protested every step of the way.


Travel retail reincarnation However, those protesters have not been able to stop the inevitable from happening. As highlighted in this year’s report, consolidation of the industry


– at least on the operators side – has seen the market share of the top 10 international duty free & travel retailers grow from 36% in 1998 to nearly 54% in 2018; a jump of almost 20%. As companies operating in the travel retail market re-evaluate


what more they can contribute to the industry going solo, they often realise that another larger, perhaps younger and more agile outfit can bring them back to life; a reincarnation of sorts. We see this happening on the UK High Street currently, as major


supermarkets merge, or iconic department stores find themselves being bought out by those better schooled in the art of online retailing and social media marketing. And although we may feel like this is a symptom of the fast-paced,


tech-obssessed world we live in now, it is important to see what TRBusiness was writing about in this industry 20 years ago... “What is clear is that the top 10 travel retailers have continued to


increase their share of the global market in 1997 [...] Consolidation is likely to continue for as least a few years yet as tough market pressures force retailers to examine the viability and growth potential of their businesses.” Words written by former TRBusiness Editorial Director, Doug
