ASIA PACIFIC: EVER RICH DUTY FREE
Ever Rich prepares ‘new surprises’ at Taoyuan T2 following tender win
Ever Rich Duty Free Shop tells Luke Barras-Hill that passengers will be greeted with ‘new surprises’ at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport Terminal 2, following the Taiwanese travel retailer’s recent tender win.
I
n August, Ever Rich Duty Free Shop (Ever Rich) was named top bidder for two 12-year mixed
duty free concessions (plus three-year extension options) at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport Terminal 2 in what was understood to have been a tightly-fought contest with runner- up and fellow incumbent Tasa Meng Corporation (Tasa Meng). Lotte Duty Free, Shilla Duty
Free, Dufry Group and DFS Group were also understood to have been involved in the bidding. Up for grabs was 27,000sq m at
South Wing Area C (currently held by Ever Rich) and 34,000sq m at North Wing Area D (run by Tasa Meng). The successful bids were
understood to have been judged on a pre-determined points system across determinants including management planning, construction, renovation and financials, although Taoyuan International Airport Corporation did not make further details available officially.
CSR commitment Under the terms of the tender the winning bidder can choose to operate only one area, with the other handed to the runner-up (Tasa Meng). The Public Private Partnership
model also includes a requirement that the winning duty free operator renovate and maintain public area facilities for passengers in their chosen concession area, such as waiting lounges, transfer corridors and other facilities. Speaking to TRBusiness, Ever Rich
makes clear that it will continue to give back to society, reinforcing its already strong commitment to corporate social responsibility. “As a professional duty free
business operator in Taiwan for more than 20 years […] we know the Public-Private Partnership system

and have helped the local economy and industry,” says an Ever Rich Duty Free spokesperson. “We have confidence in our
profession and corporate philosophy. CSR is part of Ever Rich’s DNA. This helps us to make the right decisions and so we will definitely continue giving back to society.” Speaking about the tender victory,
he continues: “We were delighted to be the top bidder and awarded the contract. Preparations are well underway to make sure we offer passengers new surprises.” The spokesperson did not
elaborate on what those ‘surprises’ might be, but it is safe to say they will be interesting given Ever Rich’s track record of delivering new brands and theatre at the airport over the years.
Resilient outlook Business has been healthy in 2018 despite a challenging climate and the Taiwanese travel retailer has optimism in the industry’s future development.
“Despite a number of external
challenges, we are demonstrating great resilience in driving continued growth and the performance in the first half of 2018 is growing compared to the same period last year,” explains the spokesperson. Elsewhere, South Korean duty
free has been contending with the highly concentrated and hurtful strain on Chinese tourist arrivals due to the dispute with China over the stationing of the US-supplied Terminal High Altitude Area Defense missile system (THAAD). While conciliatory gestures have
been forthcoming, the long-term effects are still being measured;
“As a professional duty free business operator in Taiwan for more than 20 years, we have experience and a good reputation...we know the Public-Private Partnership system and have helped the local economy and industry.”
