JAPAN REPORT: JATCO Jatco prepares for major refurb at Haneda
Sales growth continues across Japan Airport Terminal Co. Ltd’s Tokyo airport stores ahead of a major expansion scheme at Tokyo Haneda Airport. This should increase international passenger capacity by 50%. David Hayes finds out more.

apan’s largest duty free retailer, Japan Airport Terminal Co. Ltd (Jatco), is reporting double- digit revenue growth at its two
airport retail locations in Tokyo – Narita International Airport and Haneda Airport Tokyo International Air Terminal – as rising Chinese passenger numbers boost sales in the operator’s boutiques and duty free shops. “Our total sales at Narita Airport
were up 13% in financial year ending 31 March, 2018 (FY2017), but in Q1 FY2018 they are up 30%,” Hideki Hayashi, Deputy Executive Officer and Vice President in Japan Airport Terminal Co. Ltd’s Travel Retail Operations Division, tells TRBusiness. “Last year we were not so
happy, but this year the business environment has changed. “Our two Narita Terminal 1
North Wing general merchandise shops sales have increased about 30%; almost all the customers are Chinese.”
Narita T2 store upgrade Jatco operates nine outlets directly at Narita Airport as well as an additional 11 luxury boutiques (indirectly) on behalf of Narita International Airport Corporation (NAA), the airport owner. In addition to the two mixed
category duty free shops, Jatco directly operates three standalone boutiques in T1’s North Wing – Chloé, Montblanc and Hermès. Meanwhile in T2, the company operates two mixed category shops in the central terminal area and a Gucci boutique in T2 Fifth Avenue. The other directly operated
Narita Airport shop is an airside confectionery store in T3, according to Hayashi. Jatco’s T1 North shops and
boutiques serve passengers flying with SkyTeam Alliance airlines, which include Delta Air Lines, Korean Air, China Eastern Airlines,

China Southern Airlines, KLM and Air France among others. “Passenger numbers have
increased in T1,” says Hayashi. “Perfume and cosmetics is the
main category in our T1 North general shops, especially Japanese brands Shiseido and SKII skincare and makeup. “Makeup sales [represent more]
in volume, but skincare sales [exceed makeup] in value.” As part of plans to upgrade
its Narita Airport retail offer in preparation for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, Jatco is planning to refurbish its T2 mixed category main

Jatco is a private company owned by various shareholders including Japan Airlines (JAL) and All Nippon Airways (ANA), which each have a 5% shareholding. As well as owning domestic Terminals 1
and 2 at Haneda Airport, Jatco is the largest shareholder in Tokyo International Airport Terminal (TIAT) at Haneda, followed by JAL and ANA. TIAT’s 10 other shareholders include
Narita International Airport Corporation and Tokyo Electric Power Co., along with
various banks and corporate investors. In addition to duty free operations at
Narita and Haneda airports, Jatco supplies duty free merchandise to New Kansai International Airport where the company operates four boutiques and manages KAA’s duty free shop in Kansai’s T2 Extension LCC Terminal. Elsewhere in Japan, Jatco also supplies
duty free goods wholesale to Chubu International Airport in Nagoya, which is owned by an independent company.
