COVER INTERVIEW: ERIK JUUL-MORTENSEN
[in attendance] every year…but anyway, to me, it’s not a matter of numbers. It’s a matter of making sure we have the right quality of people and that’s something that we spend an awful lot of time analysing and we get the people there that we think should be there.” Of course, the association can do
nothing to influence global events that may deter companies from attending the show and it is almost impossible to prevent scheduling conflicts with other trade events, which has affected visitor numbers in the past. “However, if you look at pre-
registration figures for the event today, they are very encouraging,” says Juul-Mortensen. “So, we may very well have an increase again, but I wouldn’t bet on +6% again.” Interestingly, visitors from the
Americas grew by 16% last year, prompting TRBusiness to ask whether the merging of the IAADFS and ASUTIL shows – both Americas- based trade events – might have had an effect on a greater number of Americas delegates attending the TFWA’s World Exhibition. “The association has worked
very hard to grow this number and last year the +16% was very, very positive,” he says. “I don’t think it’s because the IAADFS and ASUTIL shows have merged to create the Summit of the Americas, I really don’t. “We have a very close cooperation
with both ASUTIL and IAADFS and this is a good opportunity to congratulate both associations on their decision to join forces and I am certainly looking forward to seeing how the next show in Orlando, in a new location, will go.” As well as a reasonably steady
growth in visitor numbers, the association also continues to see the number of exhibitors grow. However, this is not necessarily a good thing, as Juul-Mortensen admits. “The waiting list for Cannes is long;

new area. This year it’s the Majestic (Hotel) beach. So, we are able to increase the number of stands every single year and yet, as you know we have a number of cancellations for various reasons every year. “It’s an ongoing battle and some
would say it’s a positive problem. I don’t think necessarily it is a positive problem because definitely we would like to be able to welcome more exhibitors than we have at the moment.”

APAC buyers +5% The association’s smaller, but no less successful event, The TFWA Asia Pacific Exhibition and Conference, has also seen attendance rise in recent years. Importantly for exhibitors the number of buyers attending the show grew by +5% last year.
This show certainly benefits from the fact that Asia Pacific generates the greatest duty free and travel retail sales of any other region in the world, by a significant margin. TRBusiness asks Juul-Mortensen whether he thinks this show may eventually outgrow its big sister in the South of France. “I have always said that I wouldn’t
