EUROPE: ARI IN DUBLIN
renovate its T2 stores in October. Carpenter says: “We have been waiting for the T2 development to kick off for a couple of years. Now we are in full flow, [WHSmith] have the contract and will basically redevelop the store. “I have seen what the finished
version will look like in Gatwick Airport’s South Terminal. It looks amazing and very digital and should be finished before Christmas.” Incidentally, the Pure Pharmacy
ARI team members including Anthony Kenny, Acting CEO (far-left), Ray Hernan, incoming CEO (second from left) and Rachel Cartwright, Alcohol and Tobacco Manager, Dublin T2 (fourth from right) celebrate the official opening of the new T2 liquor store.
are very much the driving force of a lot of our gin growth. We have significantly extended our product range by opening this new area.” Anthony Kenny, who at the time of
writing held the role of Acting CEO, ahead of becoming Deputy CEO and CFO once a formal handover is complete, adds: “In terms of our vision to become best alcohol retailer this is another big step for us. “We transformed the liquor
offering in Terminal 1 and are building on this in Terminal 2. The sense of place we are providing here can really drive us up.
Bringing gin to life “Our commitment to sense of place, irrespective of which airport we work in is evident with the whisky collection.” “It is not just with whiskies, but
champagnes, wines, gins and other segments as well. We are giving the distilleries, particularly the Irish ones a great platform.” Regarding the gin assortment
in particular, Paul Hunnisett, Global Head, Liquor, Tobacco, Confectionery & Food is convinced
“We have over 80 gins and it is really important to have a set of gin ambassadors which bring that to life.”

it has the best selection in travel retail. “We have over 80 gins and it is really important to have a set of gin ambassadors which bring that to life.” Creating a rolling calendar of new
and exciting elements for customers is a priority as they expect to see new things each time they visit the store. Hunnisett says: “Following on from Irish whiskies, we have done much more with American, Scotch and world whiskey. “Being an Irish airport, this has
never been a huge piece of our business, but we have worked closely with Beam, Brown-Forman and the guys at William Grant to put together a much more interesting range of other whiskies. Early indications suggest this is being really well shopped. “Here, it is an even mix of EU
and non-EU travellers. Our biggest destination is the UK or US. Getting the range right for our US pax was absolutely vital. They love their whiskies and cognacs.”
Further development Openings of the Avoca and liquor stores barely scratch the surface in terms of what is to come in Terminal 2. A Spectrum sunglasses shop
was due to begin trading at the end of August, followed by a Gemini jewellery and watches store last month. This is equivalent to ARI’s Hour Passion store in T1. An adjacent unnamed fashion unit is also due to open. In addition, WHSmith will
shop was also due to close in September and move to where the Dixons Travel shop used to be (It is now in another location). All openings and renovations
exclude the creation of a new walkthrough perfumes & cosmetics store, the first part of which will open in the first or second week of October. Carpenter comments: “Passenger
flow coming through from security will all go through perfumes and cosmetics. Hoarding will be on one side for the first part of the offer and from next February it goes on the other side when we deliver the south side of the P&C walkthrough. “Next March, the north side
will be developed and then the confectionery section will be done. The completion of the Terminal
2 retail revamp can’t come quick enough for Hernan, who comments: “If I am thinking about this as a passenger as I would have been until recently, I never felt T2 was right. I am delighted that change is ongoing which will drive business for us.” «
ARI has partnered with the likes of Brown-Forman to create a more interesting range of other whiskies to complement its Irish offering.
