Vienna Airport set to reshape its commercial mould at T2

A department store-style shopping experience is set to begin construction at Vienna International Airport Terminal 2. Björn Olsson, Senior Vice President, Center Management tells Luke Barras-Hill it is reshaping the terminal’s existing travel retail footprint.
I
n the first six months of the year, Vienna International Airport operator Flughafen Wien posted
a 1.4% rise in its Retail & Properties revenue to €62.2m ($72.2m), with EBIT up 11.2% to €32.6m ($37.8m). Growth in this segment wasn’t
able to outstrip that of passenger gains at Vienna Airport itself, which increased by 5.5% to 11.8m. In conversation with TRBusiness,
Björn Olsson, Senior Vice President, Center Management admits the core duty free environment at Vienna Airport has been ‘pretty tough’ during the period. “Many people are speaking
about the impact of digital but I think there are other factors as well,” he admitted. “You only have to look at currency
and exchange rates. Russians were one of the hero nationalities that saved us last year and this year the Russian rouble was 15-20% more expensive than the euro, which had a big effect. “We are a bit worried about duty
free as we have a hard time balancing that with speciality retail […], which has had a good performance. “From a revenue perspective

but it is understood that concept drawings could be available around October 2019, ahead of an anticipated tender in Q1 2020. “We will start the tender work for
the new terminal building – south extension – at the beginning of 2020,” confirms Olsson. “That terminal development

will of course integrate more of the passenger flows into one; that is one of the biggest problems at the moment with Vienna and other airports with a really diverse passenger flow and different walkways.” Indeed, it is this issue that is
guiding the thrust of Vienna’s efforts at Terminal 2. As reported on

Lagardère Travel Retail has secured a new multi-brand fashion contract. Set to open in the second quarter
of 2019, the concession includes a tranche of big label fashion brands stationed in a re-mapped 730sq m area. Construction will begin in
November, says Olsson, and will cover close to 12 stores.

expected to take up to six months, whereupon a new, centralised retail zone will greet passengers. The existing Heinemann Duty Free
store will remain the same, but some of the speciality retail units such as leathergoods and sunglasses will be scaled back to place more emphasis on core duty free.
