The house is located on a slope of the Azpitia Valley, on the coast around Lima, Peru, at about 20 Km from the seashore. A place renowned for the local vineyards and pre-Columbian ruins. A natural oasis for people escaping from the large South American metropolis. The surrounding landscape strikes a contrast between the desert and the green areas along the course of river Mala. The valley is enclosed between hills and peaks rising up from the desert on both sides of the river. Its natural colour palette combines tones of beige, light brown, red, anthracite black, and pale grey. Rafael Freyre’s project aimed at integrating the house with the landscape, developing a geometry and a composition of textures, materials, and colours that hint at those of the surroundings. This way, the house almost becomes a new natural element that blends perfectly with the environment. This goal was achieved by processing different materials with local craft methods and modern industrial technologies. The stones used were chosen from the area near the house, creating an implicit connection with the mountain. The flooring of the terrace, as that of the interiors, is made of porcelain stoneware. This material was chosen because of its expressive possibilities and technical properties. It also underlines the gradual transition from the rough rocks of the exterior to the smooth surface of the interiors. Inside the house, other materials that blend flawlessly with ceramics. One example is the wood from an old pier; another is Pumaquiro, a type of wood that can withstand even the harshest weather conditions, which was used for the windows and brise soleil pergola of the terrace. On the other hand, exposed bricks were used for the perimeter curtain wall. In addition to determining the appearance of the façades, this material protects the building from cold and heat with its compact and porous surface. The terraced base of the villa, which descends towards the swimming pool, is made of local stone blocks covered with xerophytes, which conceal the sauna located below the house.


At the entrance height, near the large windows of the common living room, dining room, and kitchen areas, there is a large patio terrace that surrounds the house. The external living area is protected by a wooden roof, designed like a sort of textile mesh that allows light to enter and, at the same time, protects against solar radiations. This area was conceived as a transition area (shade, semi-shade), capable of projecting the life inside towards the landscape outside. The continuity between the interiors and the exterior is highlighted not only by the uniformity of the ceramic floor, but also by the special solution adopted for the large windows installed flush the floor. The first floor of the villa is an open space surrounded by gardens and includes the common areas, whereas the private areas (the master bedroom and guest room) are located on the second floor from where you can admire a breathtaking view of the valley.
