This restoration and expansion of a villa in Le Touquet, France, stands out for its balanced approach and respect for the existing building. In fact, the villa was restored and redeveloped according to its original Anglo-Norman style with a contemporary edge expressed in its adjoining annexe. The latter has a clearly modern character and interacts harmoniously with the garden and magnificent trees around it.

Designed by Alain Demarquette, the annexe creates a contrast with the charming structure of the original building dating back to the early 20th century. While the identity of the latter stemmed from the will to protect the building from weather agents through a mainly matt envelope, small windows, and a large pitched roof, the new volumes speak the contemporary language of transparency. Simultaneously, their accurately designed layout introduces the added value of a different distribution hierarchy, where the centre of gravity is represented by the entrance and staircase, located in the space where the new and the existing meet, ensuring balance and complementarity. The small connection compartment features anthracite grey coverings, which underline both the difference and dialogue between the two elements of the project. This effect is particularly marked on the entrance side of the residence. On the other hand, on the garden side, the main body of the expansion features white composite coverings up to the existing roof, thereby developing the volume for the new stairway. On the ground floor, the building is articulated in several rooms with different purposes. The kitchen is connected directly with the technical rooms and opens to the living room and dining room on the opposite side, and to the piano corner. The living room ceiling is very high and aligned with the large glazed windows overlooking the patios facing south and south-west. This space identifies the border between the interior and the exterior, accentuated by the identical treatment that characterises the tiles of the living room and the patios it opens to. The treatment is essential and monochrome, except for the dining room, which boasts a minimal open fireplace. On the other hand, the piano area gives a sense of peace and quiet, thanks to the durmast floorboards and anthracite grey ceiling. At the centre of the new complex, in front of the villa’s entrance, the new tailor-made stairway was designed to be a fine, distinctive element. It starts off with a masonry section covered with solid wood, then it turns and becomes a floating stairway covered with the same material. The original openings were maintained in the restored existing building, which features smaller, more intimate rooms, such as the TV/reading corner and the master bedroom. For each block on the upper floors, there are bedrooms with bathrooms and relaxation areas. The new white lacquered aluminium window fittings match the coverings, while those in the existing wing were remade identical to the original. The metal elements of the coping provide a dynamic and flexible look to the building and generate multiple bioclimatic effects, developing an articulate sun shading system that attenuates the thermal load on the envelope during the summer.
