Cuneo’s new Swimming Stadium is an example of Italian excellence, as it combines functionality, low environmental impact, accessibility, and attention to the landscape, comfort, and energy efficiency. The complex is located in a green area specifically designed for sports and leisure and it merges perfectly with the Natural Park of the Gesso and Stura rivers, from which it takes the brown colours and textured finishes. Inside, it defines light and bright areas, especially in the bordering areas overlooking the landscape. This contrast is enhanced in the different sizes of the doors and windows. The roof consists of glulam beams with a 40 m span on a reinforced concrete structure. The prefabricated colour-enhanced concrete panels of the side curtain walls were customised with shades that mimic the surroundings. On the southern side, a spectacular glass window opens to the park ensuring the utmost brightness to the pool. The new indoor 8-lane Olympic-size swimming pool (51.50x21 metres) has two fixed bulkheads, a boom, and the grandstand for the public. It can contain 616 people and houses a coffee bar overlooking the pool through a full-height glass window. To optimise the management of the facility, ensure its rational use, and facilitate orientation, the interiors consist of one pool surface under the “suspended” grandstand, thereby developing a system with several entrances located at different levels. The access system is defined by wide glass windows between the structural partitions that link the facility to the city bank, and is characterised by a single central node, the reception hall from where you can reach the pools (including the outdoor ones) without doubling the on-site personnel and essential services. One of the entrances allows you to access the facility directly from the urban elevator, thereby making it closer to the city centre for pedestrians. The northern area of the building houses the locker rooms and related facilities. Of this area, 100 sq.m are reserved for judges and instructors and 660 sq.m for users. It was designed in such a way as to ensure areas dedicated exclusively to schools, families, etc. The project of the interiors was strongly influenced by the theme of functional and decorative coverings, where ceramics provides the overall quality of the intervention both in terms of aesthetics and performance. The project was carried out with great care and attention to every detail. The choice of the ceramics used in the various areas (including service areas) stemmed from the need to characterise the spaces and brighten them up while keeping the contemporary and uniform white background of the architecture, thereby highlighting the connection points to facilitate orientation. All the decorations are the result of the different use of one format, which reflects chromatic research and primary combinations typical of contemporary art.
