As always, it is important that you closely read the question. The Geography exam is one of the most intense exams on the Leaving Certificate with regard to timing, so an extra few moments analysing the question prevents mistakes and might well save time in the long run.
The potential for making a mistake with this question is in the word ‘developed’. When looking for key words, it is possible to focus solely on the section of the question after the comma. However, if you had used the Brazilian case study to answer this question you would be awarded 0 marks (i.e. lose 6 per cent of the total Geography exam).
Although not specified in the marking scheme, the best way to answer this question is to divide it into two headings (i) impact on donor region and (ii) impact on receiver region. It is good to begin your answer with a definition of Rural–urban migration, in order to show the examiner that you understand the topic.
SAMPLE ANSWER
Rural–urban migration refers to the movement of people from the countryside to towns and cities [2m]. Rural–urban migration has occurred in Ireland since the beginning of the twentieth century as people migrate from the rural region of the West to Dublin City [2m].
Donor Region
The outward migration experienced in the rural west has led to population decline occurring [2m]. From the 1960s onwards, increasing levels of mechanisation led to a 75 per cent reduction in the number of people working in the agricultural sector [2m]. As a result, people were forced to move eastwards in search of work, with most migrating to Dublin, where there were pull factors such as employment opportunities and a higher standard of living [2m].
