CASE STUDY F

Central Place of Carrick-on-Suir Te town of Carrick-on-Suir serves as a central place for the surrounding hinterland, as can be seen in the OS map extract (Fig. 4.34 on page 128).

A Route Focus

: Fig. 4.22 Carrick-on-Suir acts as a central place to the surrounding hinterland.

Carrick-on-Suir is a route focus. It has national route ways such as the N24, which connects the town to its hinterland. Regional roads such as the R697, R696 and R680 also focus on the town. A railway serves the town, with a station located at S 407 220. Several third-class roads link the town to its hinterland. All these routes converge in Carrick, making it the central place for the area. Terefore, Carrick-on-Suir is a nodal point, providing easy access to the town for the people living in the hinterland. Te railway is a high order service which enables people to travel well beyond the town.

Hierarchy of Goods

Carrick-on-Suir has a high population and occupies an area of more than 3 km2

. Tere are many people living in the hinterland who also avail of

services in the town. Te town has services including schools, Garda station, churches, fire stations, and tourist information offices. It is also likely too that the number of services in the town will increase as the town is served by national routeways. Services and jobs are available to the people of the hinterland.

Range of Treshold of Services

Carrick-on-Suir has a relatively high population and it offers a wide variety of goods and services. Tese services vary from low order services such as groceries to middle order services such as schools at S 404 221 and S 411 223. Tere are only three other schools on the map, which are most likely small rural primary schools. Te schools in Carrick must therefore be large, as they are providing education to a very large hinterland. With a population of over 5,000 people, the town has the potential for the development of high order goods with a high threshold in the town.
