embracing ageing with confidence, Natura-Tec developed a unique and powerful cocktail of microalgae that provides an integrative approach to enhance mature skin beauty. Natura-Tec Marine BlueRevelation 50+ (now referred to as the ‘microalgae anti-ageing active’) has proven its ability to moisturise, nourish and smooth mature skin while acting on cutaneous density and elasticity. The microalgae anti-ageing active is the


result of extensive research by our joint group biotechnology centre and is produced using our patented closed-circuit low carbon footprint photobioreactor technology which ensures consistent quality and purity combined with environmental compliance and minimal carbon footprint (Figure 1). This technology presents a low risk of


contamination by other species or external pollution or aggression; it allows control of the environmental conditions obtaining a high level of reproducibility of produced biomass. Our manufacturing site is a fully integrated microalgae, energy and biorefinery plant, designed and developed to be an advanced sustainable production unit, energetically independent. Waste from vegetable oils and biomass is recycled in an onsite power station to produce safe energy and feed microalgae with CO2

Natura-Tec’s microalgae anti-ageing active is based on Cylindrotheca Fusiformis (Brown Diatom) and Nannochloropsis Oceanica (Green Eustigmatophyceae) species concentrated in omega-9 triglycerides. These two specific species have been selected for their extremely active composition. Natura-Tec’s’microalgae anti-ageing active is a complex combination based on: ■ Rare mono- and poly-unsaturated fatty acids with a specifically high content in omega-3, long chain EPA and omega-6 ETA. EPA (C20:5) are involved in the skin protection from UV damage and increase of collagen and elastic fibre expression.3


ETA (C20:4) fights


against inflammation and increases stem cell proliferation while restoring normal lipid- derived signalling molecules.4


It features:


■ A high level of natural tocopherols fighting oxidation; ■ A vegetable sterol composition particularly rich in cholesterol of vegetable origin and β-Sitosterol which respectively accelerates skin barrier recovery and promotes hyaluronic acid biosynthesis in fibroblasts.5


In vivo evaluation The aim of the study was to evaluate the in vivo efficacy of the microalgae anti- ageing active incorporated at 1.5% in a basic formulation, compared to a placebo, on cutaneous signs of ageing such as skin hydration, skin elasticity, skin density and wrinkle visibility after two months of use, on women with average age of 55. From an experimental point of view, skin


hydration was assessed by measuring water changes at epidermal level; skin elasticity and visco-elastic properties were measured on the principle of sucking and elongation of the

skin through a specific probe; skin density was evaluated by measuring collagen quantity on the dermal/epidermal junction, with an imaging system providing high resolution ultrasound images of the skin. A higher density and distribution of coloured areas corresponds to a higher concentration of collagen, elastin and the nutrients; measurement of wrinkle visibility was based on quantitative colorimetric and morphological analysis of wrinkles. The evaluation was conducted at four time


points: T0 (before treatment), T15 days of treatment, T1 month and T2 months.


Results Whatever the evaluated parameters, the microalgae anti-ageing active already provides excellent results and significant impacts on the skin quality after 15 days of use. After two months of use, thanks to Natura-


Tec’s microalgae anti-ageing active skin hydration is significantly enhanced by 33% and skin elasticity is significantly increased by 20%. Regarding skin density (Figure 2), with the active formulation after two months of use, the coloured areas are larger than before with a more homogeneous distribution: zones without collagen are reduced by 17% indicating that


the microalgae anti-ageing active significantly increases concentration of collagen, elastin and skin nutrients, leading to an increase of skin density. Finally, the results on wrinkle visibility are on the same line: the microalgae anti-ageing active demonstrated an excellent efficacy on the wrinkle visibility (Figure 3) with a significant reduction of 26%.


Conclusion Once again Natura-Tec shows its strong focus on effective sustainable development by creating Natura-Tec Marine BlueRevelation 50+, a new highly efficient microalgae active based on sustainable technology, in line with the current and future needs of the industry.
