New fragrance technology revealed
CPL Aromas has unveiled AromaSpace to the world, a technology which combines headspace analysis with perfumers’ creativity and expertise. This fusion of skills enables CPL’s team to produce beautiful, true-to-nature fragrances and recreate odours from all around the world. The biggest fragrance houses
use Headspace technology – CPL Aromas has been doing it since the 1990s. But now the company is bringing the technology one step further, by combining it with its Perfumers’ expertise to create a unique set of perfume bases. In its essence, AromaSpace
is a joint venture between the Analytical and Perfumery teams. From the headspace analysis, GC-MS analysts produce a detailed chemical composition. This skeleton formulation is compounded and

adjusted to recreate the odour of the plant or other source. During this process, components that are unavailable or not safe to use are usually found and must be taken out, leaving gaps in the chemical composition. So, taking the analysis
as a starting point, CPL Aromas’ perfumers use their expertise to fill these gaps transforming the raw data into a fragrance, which can then be used as a base from which to expand, or a scent to inspire other creations.
Study shows hair loss efficacy
Gencor has reported positive results from a pilot, open- label, randomised, parallel and in-vitro study in the Journal of Cosmetology & Trichology that assessed the efficacy and safety of an Ageratum Conyzoides formulation on hair loss. Ageratum Conyzoides L., also known as “goat weed” or “billy goat weed”, is an annual herb belonging to the family Asteraceae. It is traditionally used
in the treatment of skin disorders, ulcers, burn wounds, diarrhea, infectious diseases, headaches and gynecological diseases. In the open label study, 28 otherwise healthy males and females over 18 years of age exhibiting pattern baldness received either a 0.5% or 1% strength A. conyzoides gel formulation to be applied topically twice per day for 8 weeks. Hair growth was measured by temporal recession distance and participants’
quality of life was assessed by the Hair Distress Questionnaire. Study results showed that 64% of men and 100% of women self-reported an improvement in their hair loss symptoms associated with application of the A. conyzoides gel formulation at 1% and 0.5% strength, twice daily for 8 weeks. Over 65% of both men and women indicated an improvement in their hair-related quality of life.

Antioxidant efficacy of sandalwood assessed
New cellular research recently published in the Cosmetics Journal has found that Indian sandalwood oil is a more potent antioxidant than the known lipophilic antioxidant vitamin E (alpha tocopherol). In the study, commissioned by
Quintis Sandalwood, researchers found that with subsequent exposure to environmental stressors, Indian sandalwood oil recorded a reactive oxygen species reduction 30-40% higher than the recorded reduction from Vitamin E.
The study also found that
Indian sandalwood oil is capable of significantly decreasing the damage to collagen in skin tissues caused by stressors such as blue light from solar and digital sources, and pollution from cigarette smoke. These findings indicate that
Indian sandalwood oil could serve as an effective protective and anti-ageing active ingredient in cosmetics and dermatology, opening up the potential to offer those benefits to consumers through a range of applications.
