Richard Scott – Editor, Personal Care

Earlier in 2020, the organising committee made the decision to transform the physical Congress into a virtual one due to the ongoing global pandemic. A spokesperson for the IFSCC said at the time: “This has been an exceptionally difficult decision, but the safety and health of our community are more important. We commit you that we will do our best for the success of the first virtual IFSCC Congress.” The first IFSCC Virtual Congress 2020

Yokohama took place from October 21-30, 2020. The event launched with a welcoming ceremony hosted by IFSCC 2020 Chair Dr Yshikuni Yamamoto that displayed Japanese traditional performing arts in the form of Shakkyo “The Stone Bridge”. Following this impressive and lively

production, Mr Emanuele Piras, President of IFSCC, addressed the virtual attendees: “This is a unique event that we truly hope will remain unique. We were all looking forward to this great opportunity to travel to Japan and enjoy the great beauty of this wonderful country. To enjoy the history, culture and people and everything that makes this one of the most popular destinations in the world. But something happened. “I’m sure everyone is making wide use

of new technology, video streaming and conferences which are very useful and help us keep closer to our friends and colleagues. But we are all missing hugs and handshakes which are all the basis of networking, the engine of our industry. My opinion is that this is the biggest

loss in this Covid era. But we have to face reality and cope with this situation. “We waited until the last day to make this

very hard decision and for the very first time, we will experience the IFSCC Congress from our personal computers. It will be something new and was very challenging. The scientific content is still cutting edge and I’m sure you will enjoy the quality of the podiums, posters and keynotes.” President of the SCCJ, Mr Yoichi Shimatani,

continued the welcome: “Thank you for attending this first ever Virtual Congress. This is also the first time in 14 years that the Congress has been held in Japan [previously in Osaka]. “I have been privileged to see the incredible

developments in the cosmetic industry and IFSCC this past decade and I see a bright

future for us all. Since its inception, the IFSCC has been a platform for the best minds in our industry to come together and share ideas. This year’s Congress will be no different.” Mr Yoichi Shimatani also introduced the

theme of this year’s Congress “Beauty and Happiness: Pushing Boundaries” and said that this is an opportunity to experience and understand the direction of cosmetic technology around the world.

Distinguished Lecture: Dr Yoshinori Ohsumi – “Lessons from yeast – autophagy as a cellular recycling system” Dr Ohsumi received The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2016 for his discoveries of the mechanisms for autophagy.
