have when you’re making a product. Contract Manufacturing operates in a much more agile process; their clients want products as soon as possible. The speed and agility of the development process was very beneficial to making me a better scientist and product developer. I also reported to a very strong leader and one of the most innovative scientists I have ever known in my career and was lucky enough to learn so many things from her.
PC: So the experience improved your abilities as a formulator? GM: Yes. And I wasn’t sure at that point if I was prepared for it. Because that’s how it is when you work for a contract manufacturer. It’s really going to test your patience, your endurance, your resilience, your technical knowledge on the spot. I remember my professor in
college showed me, if you’re aspiring for a career in science, you have to have an open mind. And when I was at the contract manufacturer, I’m like, yeah, my mind was so open at times I didn’t know where to turn. There’s so many things happening at the same time.

PC: And is it around this time that you became involved with Cosmetic Societies? GM: I was involved back then, even before I moved to Florida. But after I came back to New York, I have actively pursued volunteering for the society to get more involved.

PC: Has NYSCC been a big help to you as a support network? GM: Yes, I was able to meet new people I might not necessarily meet while I’m working in the lab. It has given me networking opportunities and also a different kind of brainstorming stimuli.
PC: And you started as the Social Media Chair at NYSCC? GM: That’s right, so we took this stab at it then and from 57 members on LinkedIn, we grew it so much to thousands and thousands of members now.

We integrated all the social media sites into one aggregator and utilise analytics to keep us motivated to do better on communicating our programs and keep our members connected.
PC: And from your position at Estée Lauder, how much are they taking note of influencers and social media celebrities? GM: I believe that every company has its own social media strategy and I am very proud to work for a company that takes communication thru social media very seriously.

This proves a company’s adaptive ways to keep up with ever changing times. ELC is very active in every social media channels as seen we can all see online.
PC: As Chair of the NYSCC, you’ve had to deal with an awful lot of unexpected issues this year. How would you summarise the year? GM: It’s been very challenging both personally, professionally and emotionally! There were a lot of struggles due to the unknown. The NYSCC organisation is structured in a way to operate like a factory year after year with regular programs, trade shows, educational and networking programs. This year, we were put in a hole at the end of March as there were so many events that we had to cancel. But the best thing that happened this year was the birth of the At Home Live series. We quickly pivoted within 10 days, and pulled all the heads together of the NYSCC organisation to formulate how we were going to deliver our content that we provided at live events and spinning it creatively to make it engaging and essential for our members. We launched a webinar
platform for a two month trial run and it was such a resounding success, that we continued the program throughout this year and have enhanced it to make it even better.
