6 NEWS New refined Illipe butter available
Forestwise, supplier of sustainably sourced raw ingredients from Indonesian rainforests, now offers organic- and Fair for Life-certified, refined, bleached, and deodorised (RBD) Illipe butter. The removal of colour and
odour from Illipe butter allows it to be used with minimal effect on the fragrance and colour of personal care and cosmetics formulations. Pressed from the nuts of the Shorea Stenoptera trees
growing in the forests of Borneo, Illipe butter has been used for centuries by locals to moisturise skin and heal sores and sunburn. RBD Illipe butter holds the same properties as Forestwise’s original line of Illipe butter, namely, its moisturising efficacy and high melting point, that allows the butter to be applied in a wider range of formulations. RBD Illipe butter contains
only a negligible amount of free fatty acids, therefore, any
possible chemical reactions with other ingredients in formulations are minimised. The low odour grade ingredient can also be used at higher concentration levels in body butters and other similar skincare products. Additionally, manufacturers that formulate with Forestwise’s RBD Illipe butter can include sustainability claims on their products, as the ingredient is certified USDA Organic, and Fair for Life and EU Organic by Ecocert.
Tomato seed extract soothes skin
Praan Naturals has introduced Tomato Seed CO2 Total Extract (Solanum Lycopersicum (Tomato) Seed Extract) to its range. The average tomato typically
contains over 150 seeds. Each tiny seed is rich in lycopene, vitamin E and essential fatty acids. Tomato Seed CO2 Total Extract is obtained by pressurised supercritical fluid extraction using carbon dioxide as the solvent. This method effectively extracts all the beneficial lipophilic constituents present in the
tomato seeds. Once the extraction process is complete, the CO2
dissipates back into a
gaseous state, and the extract then undergoes molecular distillation to remove unwanted components. The CO2 supercritical extraction process exposes the extract to far less heat during production than even a cold pressed oil, leading to a reduced risk of oxidation and a much more prolonged and stable shelf-life. With its composition of
Multifunctional protection
Microbial inhibitors are no longer considered as mere functional ingredients performing an important role without being noticed, but as active elements of the formula able to fulfil multiple roles according to the product’ characteristics, trends or claims. Sinerga, observing this
market trend and studying new molecules with multiple activities, has developed a new concept of protection with 2 multifunctional ingredients: Mintiol and Parfiol. Mintiol is a natural and
Cosmos microbial inhibitor with soothing and refreshing properties, able to characterize the formula adding extra
benefits for skin. It is a mint derivative whose scent matches well with a wide choice of olfactory notes, such as citrus, fruity, floral and gourmand. It has a wide spectrum of activity on microorganisms and it is effective in a wide range of pH, from 4 to 9. It is able to act both as a complete preservative solution (suggested dosage: 2%) and as a booster of other preserving substances (from 0.5% to 1.6%), working in synergy to protect the formula. Parfiol is a blend of esters and
aromatic alcohols that combines the formulative protection with odour masking properties, conferring a pleasant creamy olfactory note to the cosmetic. It is effective on a wide range of

microorganisms at a pH from 4 to 9. 1% of Parfiol is enough to completely preserve the formula. Otherwise, it can be used in combination with other preservative substances, using a concentration below 1%, as a booster of the co-microbial inhibitors. It matches well with musky, gourmand, ozonic and floral notes. From an internal panel, 0.5% of Parfiol is already able to have odour masking activities in combination with other ingredients with a characteristic scent.
lycopene, essential fatty acids and vitamin E, Praan Naturals Tomato Seed CO2 Total Extract is a nourishing, moisturising extract that is worthy of inclusion in the finest personal care applications. Suitable for all skin types, it is especially well suited for inclusion in formulations intended to soothe, protect and support delicate or ageing skin. Tomato Seed CO2 Total Extract absorbs rapidly, leaving the skin looking and feeling more youthful and hydrated.
Sage essential oil for skin
calming Ashland has announced the launch of a new ingredient, American Clary Sage essential oil which builds on the tradition of healing the skin. Ashland’s American Clary
Sage (Salvia sclarea) is grown in North Carolina, US. For the last half century, Ashland has been working with a network of over 50 farmers to build on their knowledge. For the new ingredient Ashland has used field trials to boost crop production and improve the quality of the clary sage grown. Ashland extracts two main
constituents from the clary sage plant, its essential oil and sclareol. Both are used in the fragrance industry. During a two-step extraction process, the American Clary Sage essential oil is produced. “Clary sage and its
essential oils have been used for centuries by healers,” said Neil Astles, global marketing manager, Ashland. “Scientific publications support the well- known traditional use for this essential oil for skin calming and anti-microbial activities, and it is still used today in aromatherapy for a variety of ailments.”
