30 MEN’S GROOMING

‘Manscaping’, is increasingly common in men of all ages. With the rise of Manscaping there is also an increase in depilatory related skin issues for men. Manscaping was once a taboo subject,

with men using inappropriate products as there was nothing on the market to cater for their specific requirements. With the rise of the trend and the topic becoming more mainstream, skincare brands are offering ranges of products once reserved solely for the feminine category. A condition that can develop from

folliculitis, is an infection of the hair follicle that goes into the deeper layers of skin, forming an abscess (pocket of pus) known as a boil. These usually occur in the waist area, groin, buttocks, and under the arms. Skin injuries associated with shaving,

trimming, and waxing, such as cuts and scrapes can also lead to the development of infection and boils. Most boils are also caused by staph bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus). While S. aureus can live on the skin without causing infection, when a scrape or cut breaks the skin, the bacteria can enter a hair follicle. Once the bacteria penetrates the keritinized dermal surface, infection commences, triggering an immune response which leads to folliculitis and boils. Boils result in greater swelling than folliculitis and can become very painful until they rupture or are drained. Scarring can also follow a large boil infection. Buddha Wood Oil has demonstrated substantial efficacy against S. aureus.3

Sweat rash (Candidal intertrigo) Sweat rash is a common fungal infection caused by an overgrowth of a yeast (Candida) that occurs between the folds of the skin as a result of humidity, friction and lack of ventilation between skin folds. It usually presents as a red rash, often with stinging and an odor. This type of skin irritation can be easily triggered by a sweaty training session and everyday activities that result in perspiration. This type of fungal rash can develop on

skin on almost any area of the body, but most often it occurs in warm, moist, creased areas such as the armpits and groin. It tends to be more common in the summer and in those who play a lot of sports. Candidiasis of the skin develops when

the skin becomes infected with Candida. A small amount of Candida fungi is present naturally on the skin. When this type of fungus begins to multiply uncontrollably, however, it can cause an uncomfortable infection. Men can be affected with yeast

infections in the underarms, the navel, groin, buttocks and other folds of skin as well as between the toes and fingers. Crusts may form on the scalp, possibly causing hair loss.

PERSONAL CARE ASIA PACIFIC Symptoms include:

l Red rash with scaling on the periphery l Stinging skin l Burning skin l Broken skin l Blisters l Foul-smelling odour The fungus that most often causes

cutaneous candidiasis in humans is Candida albicans. C. albicans is responsible for approximately 80–90% of all skin infections caused by Candida species.4 As is the case with all pathogens, the

innate immunity of the skin represents the host’s first line of defence against Candida. People are often tempted to use over-the- counter steroid creams on rashes, however this can often make fungal infections worse, by weakening the skin’s defences. Furthermore, steroid creams do not actually remove the infection.

Skin soothing study As a topical skin soothing agent, Eremophila mitchellii (Buddha Wood) holds potential to replace synthetic ingredients or natural ingredients, with the advantage of the alluring masculine, pleasant fragrance. Researchers at Charles Sturt University

conducted testing on a large panel of Australian Essential Oils via standard disc diffusion assays at concentrations of 100%, 10% and 1%. They found that Buddha Wood showed very promising antimicrobial action against Candida albicans and Staphylococcus aureus (Wilkinson 2005), two microbes most often implicated in men’s skin issues. The impressive action of Buddha Wood was its effectiveness at lower concentrations than any of the other Australian essential oils, including Tea Tree Oil and Eucalyptus Oil. Study Synopsis:

l 18 Australian essential oils were examined for their ability to inhibit the

growth of five medically important bacteria and one yeast.

l Activity was determined using standard disc diffusion assays with each oil assayed at 100%, 10% and 1% against the five bacteria and one yeast.

l The five bacteria used in the assays were Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhimurium, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Alcaligenes faecalis and the yeast Candida.

l The essential oil Eremophila mitchellii, commonly known as Buddha Wood, showed stronger anti-fungal activity against candida than the more popularly known and researched anti-fungal oil Tea Tree.

l Eremophila mitchellii demonstrated promising antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus at low concentration. As shown in the Wilkinson and

Cavanagh study above, Buddha Wood Oil demonstrates significant inhibition of Staphylococcus aureus. This is confirmed by other published studies into Eremophila7

. Other biological studies of

Eremophila have demonstrated beneficial pharmacological properties and bioactive compounds including potent anti- inflammatory properties7

. Further studies

are exploring the potent anti-inflammatory properties of Eremophilones and their effect on dentritic cell maturation.9

Buddha Wood’s sustainability story: an alternative to sandalwood. Buddha Wood provides a sustainable and affordable base note and viable alternative to Sandalwood Oil, Agarwood Oil and other woody oils used as base notes. Sandalwood (Santalum album) has historically been sourced from India where trees have been decimated by over harvesting. A sandalwood tree should be
