Ingredient focus: sun care products
nRichard Scott – Editor, Personal Care
Sunscreens are one of the most important products within the personal care sector. Their role in protecting skin from the sun’s harmful rays saves lives across the world, while also contributing to the rise of anti- ageing and skin lightening products. Following are some of the latest
ingredients on the market to help formulators create the next line of leading sun care products. Increasingly, protection against UV radiation is moving from a niche section of the industry into everyday skin care, which opens up a range of formulating options.
Sun care ingredients Consumers want planet-friendly sun care solutions that provide safe and easy-to- apply sun protection. Antaron Eco from Ashland is based on sustainably-sourced, zero-deforestation, wood-derived cellulose. In addition, this ingredient is made in a water-based manufacturing process,

minimising the use of solvents. This globally-approved film-former provides high water resistance at a low use level of 0.5% in most formulations. It offers great formulation aesthetics, is Halal and Kosher- certified and is recommended for use in sun care emulsions, gels, and alcohol sprays. BASF experts recently developed a new
technology that incorporates the oil- soluble, high-performance and broad- spectrum UV filter Tinosorb S (INCI: BisEthylhexyloxyphenol Methoxyphenyl Triazine, abbreviation: BEMT) in the water phase by solubilising the filter active in a polymer matrix. Tinosorb S Lite Aqua (INCI: Bis-Ethylhexyloxyphenol Methoxyphenyl Triazine (BEMT) (and) Acrylates/C12-22 Alkyl Methacrylate Copolymer) enables manufacturers to include the same active in both the oil and water phase – facilitating light formulations with a reduced oil phase. In vivo and in vitro tests have proven the performance and water resistance of
formulations with the solubilised BEMT. BRB Caprylyl Methicone is a caprylyl
branched trisiloxane specifically developed for its good compatibility with many organic cosmetic ingredients. BRB Caprylyl Methicone can be used as a carrier and dispersing medium for powders and pigments. It has a wide range of personal care applications such as skin care and sun care products, colour cosmetics or leave-on hair care applications. It offers good compatibility with a wide
range of cosmetic ingredients; low viscosity and moderate volatility, while also lowering the surface tension of organic oils. Benefits include improved spreadability
and provide smooth silky light feel, reduced tackiness, greasiness and stickiness, enhanced sensory and an improved ability to distribute UV filters: SPF booster. Infraveil IT-100 from Croda is a physical
shield that delivers instant skin protection from Infrared-A (IRA) rays. HelioScreen Labs
