Rehm: Thermal System Solutions for Battery Pack Production


Roswell, GA — Electromobility is both an op- portunity and a challenge for plant and me- chanical engineering, for research and devel- opment, for the electronics industry, and for many other sectors. As a manufacturer of ther- mal system solutions, Rehm has extensive ex- pertise in the drying and coating systems used, for example, in manufacturing battery packs. Rehm is also working with research in- stitutions and industry partners on the ARTE- MYS research project, which is focused on the next generation of lithium-ion batteries. Rehm has many years of experience with


drying processes for various industrial appli- cations. This also includes film drying. Drying the electrodes is an important step in the production process for manufac- turing lithium-ion batteries. The dry- ing process withdraws the solvent from the electrode coating on the film. These thermal drying solutions enable a very high degree of purity to be achieved for the drying. With its reel-to-reel drying system RDS bat- tery, Rehm provides a concept that can be used to achieve the drying temperature via infrared radiation, convection, or a combination of both heat-transfer mechanisms. The sys- tem is primarily designed for re- search facilities. The reel-to-reel dryer provides


great flexibility in handling various electrode


formulas. Transport


through the inline system takes place from roll to roll, meaning that the film hovers in the drying area during the process, which allows it to be dried on both sides. The drying pa- rameters can be selected flexibly and the heat can be adjusted individually

tacts have D-coding and data trans- mission at up to 100 Mb/s (CAT5 in accordance with IEEE 802.3) in Eth- ernet and PROFINET environments. For mounting in the device wall, thread or press-in housings are avail- able for a mechanically stable port- screw connection. When connected, the device connectors fulfill the IP67 degree of protection. Specially shielded versions are
