Prioritizing Ease-of-Use and Auto-Programming in AOI Development

By Kobi Ventura, President, ALeader Europe L

ast year, ALeader ran a trial at a production site of one of its customers, a large EMS compa-

ny. The company had a great deal of experience with AOI systems from different suppliers, which helped make the trial very specific, practical and useful. Within the framework of the

trial, ALeader’s system tested a num- ber of boards with defects that had al- ready been detected by other AOI sys- tems used in the factory. With the standard configuration, ALeader’s system not only detected all the known defects, but also exposed a number of additional ones that were missed by the competitors’ AOI. The high performance of the

AOI was not a surprise, but the com- pany did not expect to see such rela-

tively simple defects go unnoticed by the competitors’ AOI systems, partic- ularly one from a leading vendor. The customer’s investigation re-

vealed that ALeader’s AOI was capa- ble of detecting the defects that were missed and that escapes had resulted from an ineffective program made by the engineer. This highlights the most important requirement that modern AOI systems must meet.

Easy Access to System Capabilities

SMT production is a complex

and challenging environment. Nu- merous factors can disrupt the process and adversely affect quality. When AOI programmers prepare a program for a new product they face

enormous pressure, as once the first board is assembled and all the sta- tions are ready, actual production can only begin when they provide a flawless AOI program. ALeader’s comprehensive un-

derstanding of the production envi- ronment allowed it to list the re- quirements and design the AOI sys- tem’s user interface, programming and algorithms accordingly: easy-to- learn, uncrowded, ergonomic and in- tuitive user interface; wizard- based programming proce- dure; transparent, graphic definitions for the algorithm set up and adjustment — no black boxes, no virtual “must- remember” parameters and settings; automatic process implementation when possi- ble, including auto-program- ming, library use, handling, and alerts; program quality in- dependent of user experience; and a short and simple train- ing process for new users. In 2019, ALeader intro-

duced its new generation of products. The new full 3D ALD8720S AOI, 3D ALD67 - 20S SPI were successfully re- leased, and immediately re- ceived very positive feedback from current and potential customers. The new machines are the result of the company’s large investment in R&D and of several years of hard work by more than 60 developers from China and Israel. Particularly intense efforts were

invested in the development and im- plementation of the new state-of-art ALeader 3D sensor. Thanks to the to- tally new design of the optical system, the company has achieved top preci- sion, accuracy and range in 3D meas- urement, along with a high-quality color 2D image. ALeader systems’ hardware is designed to deliver excel- lent measurement precision and accu- racy, high-quality images, top speed (in many cases faster than 2D AOI),

and high-level reliability. To achieve superior results, it is

essential to utilize all the system’s functions and capacity to their full advantage. Adding advanced fea- tures without making them easily ac- cessible is simply not enough. The latest generation of ALeader AOI and SPI machines are equipped with an intuitive, straightforward user in- terface, AI based auto-programming and debug-free OCR algorithms. Tol- erances are automatically set, ac- cording to the selected IPC level. In 2020, ALeader will continue

to invest heavily in R&D to deliver the optimal response to customers’ current and future needs and to im- prove the performance of its systems even more. Special effort will be de- voted to further enhancing the AI- based auto-programming functionali- ty, simplifying programming and de- bugging and reducing programming time to the absolute minimum. The ultimate goal is a “one-but-

ton solution” with fully automatic program creation for new products across AOI and SPI. With new AI al- gorithms, this goal appears to be

more achievable than ever. Contact: ALeader Europe, Ltd.,
