Tonight’s Celebrity Sports Q and A With Auction Held In Aid Of Crumlin Hospital

A Celebrity Sports Q and A with a Merchan- dise Auction takes place
following tonight,
Thursday, 19 October from 7pm. Some tickets are still
available for the Q and A with a sports mer- chandise auction hosted by Fota
Island Resort,
with proceeds going to both Ronald McDonald House Charities Ireland and Children’s Medical & Research Foundation Crumlin. “We have loads of ce-
lebrity sport stars coming for a Q and A for the kids above in Crumlin Hospital,” said Mark
O’Sullivan, also known as Fanta, who will emcee the event. “We have Rob and Marian Heffernan coming, the
managers
of Cork City and Cobh Ramblers, Nicolas Ro- che, Donal Óg Cusack, Aidan O’Mahony and more. We possible
have sport every covered
including camogie, ladies football, athletics, eques- trian sports and more. It is a great opportunity for kids to get
their picture
taken with these celebri- ties.” The event will include
autographs, photos and a questions and answers session with some of Ireland’s most decorated athletes. Said athletes will
include: Olympian Der- val O’Rourke, cyclist Ed- die Dunbar, former Ker- ry footballer Tomás Ó Sé, Cork City FC man- ager John Caulfield, for- mer Cork hurler Donal Óg Cusack, former Cork hurlers Brian Corcoran and Kevin Hennessy, Cobh Ramblers FC manager Stephen Hen- derson and jockey Davy Russell. Also included are Olympic race walker Robert Heffernan, for- mer Munster and Ireland rugby player Thomas O’Leary, former Kerry football Aidan O’Maho- ny, and members of the Cork Camogie and La- dies Football teams. “I’m delighted to be
emceeing the event,” said Mr O’Sullivan, “espe- cially the big auction. We have all sorts of sports merchandise from Eng- land and Ireland going for half-prices. We have football boots and jer- seys
from the Premier-
ship, Ireland and Celtic, as well as from rugby amongst a host of other great merchandise. And again, all the proceeds are going to Crumlin in Dublin.” Tickets for the Q and A with the Auction are

Cobh Confraternity Band Celebrates 50 years of Music Making by ALAN SHEEHAN
Cobh Confraternity Band will celebrate its 50 year anniversary at a spe- cial dinner event this Fri- day, 20 October. The celebrations will be
held at the Commodore Hotel, Cobh and will in- clude a meal and a special speech by Captain Mi- chael McCarthy, market- ing manager of the Port of Cork Company, who is a founding playing member of the group. The band formally
known as Cobh Confrater- nity Brass and Reed Band
was founded in 1967 to provide music for Catholic Church functions in Cobh. At this point 50 years ago recruitment,
along with
classes and training, were fully underway, as was a major
fundraising
ation. Through the hard work of the band’s officers Fr St John Thornhill (pres- ident),

(chairman), Ger Kelliher (vice chairman), Jim Cur- ley (secretary) and Eddie Powell (treasurer) were backed by its industrious committee and directed by John Kelliher, it was ready for the 1968 Eucharistic
Procession. The band’s first engage-
ment outside of Cobh took place a year later in Glen- brook.

Band’s repertoire expand- ed and soon the group were
regularly perform-
ing in concerts, at fund- raising projects, parades, festivals and sports meet- ings. Some of the band’s many memorable perfor- mances included the FAI Cup Semi-Finals between Cobh Ramblers and Sligo Rovers, the homecoming for Cobh’s track and field Olympian Sonia O’Sul-
livan, and the centenary ceremonies for the Titanic and Lusitania liners and the Australia Day festivi- ties in Cobh.

Cork on a voluntary basis to provide entertainment for up to 60 visiting cruise ships every summer and played for 32 ships to date this year. Following a re- cital featuring a mixture of Irish, popular and classical songs and marches,
the
unberthing of the boats is marked by the band’s play- ing of Charles Zimmer- man’s Anchors Aweigh.
