Thursday, 19th October 2017 East Cork Castlelyons GAA by KIERAN MCGANN

Rousing wins for Under 21 Hurlers in County Qr Final and Imokilly in Senior Semi - Final.

Castlelyons 4-11 Clonakilty 2-15. Castlelyons advanced

to the County U21A hurling semi-final with a well-earned win over Clonakilty in Ovens, home of the Eire Óg club last Sunday. The pitch was in great condition despite the persistent rain during the week and both sides were well supported which lent to good game of hurling.

Clonakilty

started very strong and reminded us of the rise in the West or is it the lev- elling of hurling stand- ards as they led 0-4 to 0-2 reaching 15 minutes on the clock. But in the second quarter we played well within ourselves as we tidied up in the backs and Jack Barry had 1-2 while Niall O Leary had 1-1 from midfield and we added 0-2 more to leave the half time score was 2-6 to 0-9 We came out of the

traps for the second half bubbling with energy and Keith O Leary had a rasper of a shot saved on the line but in came Andrew O Neill to finish to the net and put us in a good place. Then we drifted and seemed to lose concentration again as Clonakilty settled and came at us to score 1-3

without reply and with twenty minutes left on the clock it was all square and anybody’s game. Howev- er, credit our men as they rallied again as Niall O Leary scored another goal and some fine points and pull away. Clonakilty were off target with some frees and on the death Mark White had a 1-0 for them from a free but it was too little too late and it’s next up Inniscarra in the semi-final. Well done once again

well done to the lads and the management outfit. The team from the goal- ie John Paul out, backs, midfield and forwards hurled well for the hour and with a bit of luck we could make the fi- nal of this competition. We were missing lads as Jamie O Leary was on holidays, Seamus Moro- ney had an unfortunate injury and Pierse Varner at work. Hopefully, we will be at full strength for the semi-final and more on that next week. This was down for next Satur- day but is now changed to the 28th

instead to give

Imokilly star Niall O Leary some valued rest and preparation time for the county senior final as the Candy Stripes take on Blackrock next Sunday. Castlelyons Team: -

John Paul Murphy, Red- mond Walsh, Declan Varner, Peter Roche, Conor McCarthy, Shane Fenton, Michael Geary, Niall O Leary, Barry Murphy, Dave

Morri-

son, Shane Moroney, Ian O Riordan, Andrew O Neill, Jack Barry, Keith

O Leary. Subs: - Shane O Flynn (got game time) Alex Henley, Mark Hen- ley, Seamus Moroney (in- jured).

Imokilly pass the test in outstanding County senior hurling semi-final replay. The moving feast con-

tinues and the fruit at the table gets better as Im- okilly came from a rous- ing draw with last year’s champions Sarsfields in stately Páirc Uí Chao- imh to the disco lights of Páirc Uí Rinn in suc- cessive weeks. Wonder what would the maestro, Christy himself, would have said if he had was to play under lights on a Saturday night. Well his spirit lives on as another Cloyne man, Paudie O Sullivan, treated us to an array of skills in position- ing, layoffs and banging in 2-3. County star and captain Sheamie Harne- dy was also in scintillating form scoring 2-3 and his colleague in the red jer- sey Brian Lawton put in a massive hour too. These lads dictated the play and our own Castlelyons men Colm Barry and Niall O Leary played their part at the back in a cracking game of hurling as Im- okilly advanced to the County Final on a score of 4-17 to 4-10. We sure had a sprinkling of nu- merous stars throughout the field on the night and the form is good. Now to the County

final versus Blackrock is on in Páirc Uí Chaoimh

sport@eastcorkjournal.ie Notes next Sunday the 22nd

inst. Please come early as there is a huge crowd ex- pected. We look forward to a memorable day with the replay of the football finals between Nemo Rangers and St Finbarrs at 1 pm. Then the offi- cial opening with Aogán Ó Fearghail, Uachtarán CLCG. The throw in for the hurling final is timed for 4 pm and it is imper- ative that Imokilly get a good week and keep a cool head on the day. Plans and goodies are nice, necessary and being put in place but it is the hurling and form on the field that will count. We have a reasona-

ble chance on the day as we have a very good team.

History records

Imokilly as having two county senior titles while the Rockies, the record holders, have thirty-two of them and they did not pick them off the ground so we must respect them and only an honest and supreme effort will swing the day for Imokilly. Best of luck to our own lads Colm Barry, Niall O Leary, Tom Carroll and Aidan O Sullivan. The Uí Mac Coille Manag- er, Fergal Condon has worked extremely hard over the last three years in putting together this outfit and now is the hour and we wish the entire Uí Mac Coille panel and team management

the

very best in the hope that the Sean Óg Murphy cup will return to the baro- ny of Uí Mac Coille for 2017.

Football League Final. Castlelyons play Fr O

Neill in the East Cork Di- vision 3 Football League Final in a game awaiting to be played.

Our lads

played four games in the League winning three drawing one and being awarded the points in their last game. We won two games in the cham- pionship defeating Car- rigtwohill in a dour battle 0-8 to 0-4 and Aghada 0-13 to 2-2. We suffered an unlucky defeated 1-13 to 1-10 to Erins Own in the semi-final as this was a game that was ours but for a few misfortunate in- cidents. Incidentally Er- ins Own went on to win the East Cork Final and have reached the semi-fi- nal of the county since. So, we are not far off a success in football and lets us finish off the year with a good result in the league. Ourselves and Fr

O Neills will have a date for this final shortly to be ratified at the next Board meeting. No doubt the football management will be keeping the lads fresh for this final.
