Off-The-Field- Killeagh GAA Golden Jubilee of the 1967 East Cork Hurling Champions On Saturday last our club hosted a celebration to commemorate the team that won the first East Cork Hurling title in Kil- leagh. The event was held in the Old Thatch. The evening was attended by the members and mentors of the ’67 team, their fami- lies and along with current members of the club. The panel was small, only 19 in all with five members now deceased,

however

they were represented by a family member, one man travelling from Tyrone to attend in his father’s be- half. Damien Irwin did an excellent job of gathered

information on each play- er and relaying the stories as the players or family were

presented with a

personally inscribed glass plaque by our club pres- ident,

Junior Scully. The

evening gave everyone in- volved an opportunity to meet and reminisce their playing days. Those of us who attended were fortu- nate to get a small insight into a time in our club that is so different to now. It was also the beginning of a winning era in our club’s history.

Irwin for all his work in making the

the event and supplying a great variety appetizing

a fantastic success; to the Old Thatch for

canapes. The

evening was a unique oc- casion which was enjoyed by all those who attended.

MacGearailt, commended him on his loyalty and ded- ication to both the board and his club. Sean first at- tended the Board in 1963 and has seen many people come and go in the inter- vening years. On receiving

Our thanks to Damien celebration hosting of very

the trophy Sean stated that he was delighted to receive it but it didn’t signal his re- tirement and assured the board he would see them all next year. Congratula- tions Sean from all of us in Killeagh GAA.

Swans and Abbeyside. Each squad had two nine a side teams playing off si- multaneously for ten min- utes a side against another

club. The aggregate score from the two games pro- duced the overall

result.

Each team had to play the other three with the top two playing in the final and the bottom two play- ing off in a plate final. Kil- leagh played Mount Sion in their first group game. We got off to a slow start and Mount Sion raced into an early lead. The lads slowly found their feet and clawed their way back into the game. We found our scoring touch and tightened

up defensively

to leave 1 goal between the sides with a couple of min- utes left. Try as they might the lads could not get the equalising goal. In the oth- er game Killeagh started well and were well on top in midfield and got some very good scores, howev- er two goals just before half time by Mount Sion meant we trailed by 2-2 to 1-4 at half time. We hit the ground running after half time and two great team goals saw us take control. We led by 3-6 to 3-2 deep into injury time. We were ahead by a point on ag- gregate but Mount Sion launched a final attack from which they scored a great goal to claim victo- ry overall by 2 points. In our second group games we played really well

in

both matches v Carrick Swans. A feature of these matches was some great goalkeeping and defend- ing. We ran out convincing winners in both games. Our last group game was against Abbeyside. This was basically a shootout

for place in the final. In the first game Killeagh started well and took an early lead which was nev- er relinquished. The score was 0-3 to 0-0 at half time with our lads very strong in the deteriorating condi- tions. We should have had a few more scores to make it more comfortable. In the second half we got a great goal and were always in control. We won 1-3 to 0-0 in this game. In the sec- ond game it was a closer affair. Killeagh took some great scores but these were matched by Abbeyside. At half time it was 2-2 to 2-2 and all to play for. The lads dug deep and eventually got on top to win by a goal. We

advanced

by a 9 point margin on ag- gregate to meet Mount Sion in the final. Kil- leagh

well in the first game

of

started the

final. Some trojan work by our keeper and defence

allied

to good shoot- ing by midfield and forwards saw us carry a slender lead at half time. A few contentious refereeing

de-

cisions in both final matches cost us scores at

but credit to all the

both ends lads they

battled well in

trying circumstances but finished a couple of points behind in the first match. The second match was quite similar in that we played well and worked some very good scores. However, Mount Sion had some very good players who were equally adept in front of goal. It was all in the melting pot going into the last five minutes and we led briefly before Mount Sion struck the winning goal at the end. Overall the lads can be very proud of themselves. It was a great learning curve for all and the high quality games and opposition can

only lead to improve-

ment. Thanks to all the parents who travelled and supported

throughout. On October 7th

vociferously we

travelled to Erins Own for the hurling league finals day. The other competing clubs were Glen Rovers, Youghal and Erins Own. The format was similar to the previous league fix- tures, with two 9 a side games played simultane- ously for fifteen minutes each half. A draw was made prior to the games to see who we would play in the semi-final. We Continued on next page
