October 2017 East Cork Rugby Notes Youghal RFC

Youghal v Clonmel

08/10/2017 On Sunday the 8th

of

October Youghal took on the league champi- ons Clonmel at home. Youghal got off to a great start

receiving the kick

off and retaining the ball while putting together a good number of phases. Youghal worked their way up the field and won a penalty on the opposi- tion’s 22. Keith McCa- rthy converted the kick to give

the home side

the early lead. Clonmel showed why they are the champions and started to put a high number of phases together. Youghal were reduced to 14 men for 10 minutes with a yellow card. Youghal de- fended well but eventu- ally the pressure told and Clonmel broke through to score a try. The rest of the first half was an extremely physical affair with both teams working hard in attack and de- fence. Both teams were reduced to 14 men for the remainder of the

game after 30 minutes. Clonmel came out the better of the teams scor- ing two more tries in the first half to lead at half time 21-3. The

second half

started as the first half finished. The physical- ity was high from both teams Clonmel were at- tacking for the first ten minutes with Youghal conceding two penalties at the break down to go a further 6 points be- hind. Youghal finally got their hand on the ball and strung a number of phases together working their way up the field. A mistake in the middle of the field led to Clon- mel turning the ball over and going the length of the field to score anoth- er try. Youghal battled gamely and worked hard for each other to control possession of the

ball

which eventually led to Gavin Dower crossing the line for a much de- served Youghal try. Keith McCarthy converted to leave

the score 34-10.

Youghal fought hard for another score but in the end, it was Clonmel who had the final say scoring

a try to finish the game on a score line of 39-10 to the visitors.

Youghal v Skibbereen 15/10/2017 Junior Clubs Challenge Cup Youghal took on Skib- bereen in the

Junior

Clubs Challenge Cup at home in Youghal. Having lost to Skibbereen earlier in the end year Youghal were determined to win in front of their home crowd. A bad start saw the visitors score a try to lead 5-0 after about ten minutes. Weather con- ditions were poor and it took Youghal a while to warm up. Finally, string- ing some phases togeth- er but the final pass just wouldn’t go to hand. Skibbereen worked hard in defence and attack and scored two more tries be- fore half time to go in leading 15-0. Youghal came out all guns blazing and were camped on the Skibber- een line for quite a while. The forwards carried well and quick ball at ruck time led to Keith McCa- rthy crashing over for a

good try which he then converted. Score 15-7 to the visitors. A long peri- od of play in the middle of the field with both teams trying to assert their dominance, eventu- ally led to Youghal giving away a penalty which Skibbereen converted to led 18-7. Youghal picked themselves up and went on the attack again with forward carrying well and backs running nice lines. Damien Kiely who had carried well picked from the base of a ruck and spotted a gap, which he jinked his way through and then showed pace to beat

the last defend-

er to score a great solo try. 18-12 to the visitors. Youghal again went

search of another try to win the game and threw everything they had at Skibbereen to no avail. A very disappointing loss for the Youghal side.

Youghal Ladies Team The Ladies team were

away to Clonmel in their third league encounter this season. The score- board did not reflect the over performance shown by the Youghal Ladies. The team made a great start

to the game, with in immediate crossing the

gain line, the defensive line was second to none against a very well organ- ised attack. Katie Man- ning who won our starbar of the game made huge tackles and carries to break the gain line. This was complimented by a well communicated and unified Youghal team, who were well guided by full back Edel. Clonmel used a very well organ- ised attack which lead to a try on the 20 Minute mark. Kate’s kicks and restarts were very strong all day. With the day be- ing so wet the Pack had plenty of Scrums, these improved as the match went on. The pressure from the Youghal side, particularly the back line forced many knock ons from the Clonmel side. Lily was a loss in the pack being forced off with in- jury. Clonmel ran in an- other two tries from well executed back plays. The ladies really dug deep to- day in both performance

and effort. The score- board didn’t reflect a win for the Youghal side, however our overall per- formance has improved immensely this has been our aim for the previous two games and we will take the opportunity to progress it further next week at home against Bandon (more details to follow on the Club Face- book pages). Team: Kathleen Denn, Claire Murphy, Kate Sheehan, Barbara Nicholson, Liliana Sa- lomea,Angelina Stelle, Carrie Manning, Laura Varian,

Aisling O Fla-

herty, Ciara o Flaherty Katie Manning, Anna O Brien, Frionna Salmon, Anne Sugrue, Edel Wil- son. We are always looking

for new members the underage

girls (15-17)

train on Tuesdays from 6;30 -7:30 and the sen- ior ladies (18+) train on Fridays from 7:30. Come give it a try!

Youghal Junior 3 Team Sunday the 15th

second

tober saw the return of Youghal’s

of Oc- team

to action after a few years absence. Youghal took on Sundays Well in the South Munster Junior 3 League at home and found it tough early on against an experienced Sundays Well side. The Well dominated the first half going into a 27-0 lead before

half time.

Youghal responded well in the second half though and started to find their rhythm and

strung a

few nice plays togeth- er. Youghal got reward for their pressure with a well taken try from Ryan Coady. Youghal

struck

again a few minutes later through Michael Healy after a couple of good kicks ahead, the try was converted well by Char- lie Bryan. The comeback stopped there

howev-

er, leaving the full-time score at 27-12 in favour of Sundays Well.
