The OPW have con-

firmed Glanmire is to get a new police station by 2019. The new premises lo-

cated in the Sallybrook industrial estate is es- timated to cost in the region of €3 million to bring up to current po- licing standards. In 2015 the Minis-

ter for Justice Frances Fitzgerald announced Glanmire as being one of 30 locations to receive a new Garda station. The announcement

was made as part of Government’s €60 mil- lion Capital Plan 2016 – 2021 as well as a major Public Private Partner- ship project. The Office of Public

Works say a contractor for the project will be identified shortly. They say “Subject to

the necessary approvals being received, it is an-

ticipated that construc- tion works will com- mence early in the New Year and be completed by the end of 2018.” Ongoing legal issues

between the OPW and the land owner had led to the delay in providing a station for the area, which have now been resolved. Independent Cllr Ger

Keohane has welcomed the move but said the service in the village needs a doubling of manpower also. Under Cork County Council’s Local Area Plan, Glanmire is set for a further 1,500 new homes.

Cllr Keohane says

the increase in popula- tion further stresses the need for a 24 hour garda presence with the village vulnerable to day trip criminals. He said Glanmire

is left to the mercy of Mayfield and Angle- sea stations for back up

when the village station is unmanned, fearing the force are not in a position to properly deal with issues or calls. “Professional crim-

inals know the vulner- able

stations across the

country. The Glanmire station is busy and it’s only going to get busier with the popu- lation increase predicted. Gl- anmire is easy for them [pro- fessional crimi- nals]. They can be back out on to the Dublin or Waterford road and away.” Gardai in the

area have been operating from an old RIC Barracks locat- ed in the village for almost 100 years. They say the

current facili- ty is confined overcrowded,

with no suitable inter- view room and has insuf- ficient parking facilities. In 2015 when the new

station announcement was made the then Gar- da Commissioner Noirin O’Sullivan said the pro- gramme would enable the force to enhance the service they provide the

public in terms of sup- porting victims of crime and investigating crime. “In line with our trans-

formational programme it will ensure our mem- bers are accommodated and equipped to deliver a 21st

century policing service” she said.
