41 First Dominic Rooney Memorial Tournament a Huge Success in Carrigtwohill

by ALAN SHEEHAN Carrigtwohill Camo-

gie held its first Dominic Rooney Memorial Tour- nament this past Sunday, 15 October, with its own Under-12s emerging vic- torious. The tournament was Carrigtwohill

hosted at

GAA pitch in memory of Dominic Rooney, a local father-of-four who unex- pectedly passed away last year and saw four East Cork Under-12s camogie teams compete for the cup. “Despite the awful

weather, we had a great turnout on Sunday,” said Lorraine O’Con- nell, Chairperson of Carrigtwohill Camogie Club. “The two semi-fi- nals kicked off at 11am with Castlelyons versus Aghada and Carrigtwohill versus

Dungourney. Aghada came out on top

in their semi-final and Carrigtwohill beat Dun- gourney. That made it a Carrigtwohill versus Dun- gourney Final.” Ms O’Connell contin-

ued: “At this point quite a crowd had gathered, and Carrigtwohill girls started off very well easing a cou- ple of goals past the Agha- da ‘keeper. We were well ahead going into half-time. However, Aghada came out on fire. With a minute to go it was a draw game. Fortunately a breaking ball was caught by Sadhbh Cooney who made a fan- tastic straight through the Aghada defence to score a point in the dying seconds of the game. All credit to the Aghada girls, they nev- er gave up and it was a fan- tastic game of Camogie to watch.” After the final the tro-

phy was presented to the Carrigtwohill team by

Dominic’s wife Margaret and their four sons David, Adam, Cillian and Eoin. Dominic Rooney was a

father of four who unex- pectedly passed away at the age of 46 while offici- ating a camogie game be- tween Douglas and Brian Dillons at the beginning of October last year. Mr Rooney, a Sergeant with the Engineering Corps of the Defence Forces, lived in the Carrigtwohill area with his family and origi- nally hailed from Kildare. “The presentations and

speeches began with words from myself and then some emotional words from Margaret Rooney,” said Ms O’Connell. “Mar- garet and her four sons then presented the Cas- tlelyons, Dungourney and Aghada with their medals. Margaret then presented the ‘Player of the Tourna- ment’ Award to Maedhbh

deBurca and the Cup was then presented to the win- ning Captain, Rachel Des- mond too much emotion, applause and cheering.” While the hope is to

make the Dominic Roon- ey Memorial Tournament an annual event which will grow in size year after year, Ms O’Connell effused praise for the outpouring of support already shown by the Carrigtwohill and East Cork community for the inaugural event. “We would like to say

thanks to all who came on what was an awful morn- ing,” said Ms O’Connell. “Thanks to PJ Ahern, Joe Coppinger, Johnny O’Con- nell and Andrew, referees who gave up their time on the day. And thanks for the huge amount of donations received from local busi- nesses and members of the Community.”
