Nemo Rangers And St Finbarr’s Deadlocked In Cork Football Final

Nemo Rangers 0-14 St Finbarr’s 0-14

Nemo Rangers and St

Finbarr’s will have to meet again to decide the desti- nation of the Cork football title as the Barr’s produced a courageous fight-back to force a replay. In the finish it was Nemo Rangers that were hanging on as St Fin-

barr’s looked for an inju- ry-time winner. Nemo Rangers raced into an early lead shooting eight points without reply in the opening 19 minutes, before St Finbarr’s did get their opening point. Luke Connolly, Paddy Gumley

and Paul Kerrigan were to the fore for Nemo as they raced into the lead.

the Ste-

phen Sherlock, Ian Magu- ire and minor star Kevin Myres Murray got St Fin- barr’s going but their poor start saw them trail by 0-10 to 0-4 at half time. Nemo added two points

to one in reply to one for the Barr’s who saw Ste- phen Sherlock hit the bar as St Finbarr’s sought to work their way back into

contest. Two points

from wing back Lyons cut the deficit to four points with twenty minutes

maining as St Finbarr’s sought to close the gap further.

Conditions were slip-

py but Stephen Sherlock reduced the gap to just three points and with Ian Maguire dominating as St Finbarr’s made it a two- point game with Nemo beginning to hang on

re-

with just two second half points.

from Colin O’Brien St Finbarr’s lost a

great chance of another score as Sherlock lost his footing at one end while a welcome Alan O’Donovan point at the other made it a three-point game once more with ten minutes re- maining. Sherlock converted an-

other free for St Finbarr’s but Nemo who were now playing possession football conjured up a second point

Imokilly Reach County Final Against Blackrock

Imokilly 4-17 Sarsfields 4-10

Imokilly will face

Blackrock in this year’s Cork senior hurling final, after the divisional side got the better of Sars- fields in a roller coaster of a replay at Pairc Ui Rinn, last Saturday night. Team captain Seamie

Harnedy was immense for Imokilly as he led from the front with able lieutenants in Brian Law- ton, Paudie O’Sullivan and Aghada pair Will Leahy and Cian Flem- ing, all coming up trumps when the need was great- est. This was an extraor- dinary contest

that saw

Sarsfields get the opening score with a Jack O’Con- nor point. However, in keeping with an incred- ible night the next score was a goal for Imokilly, finished by Paudie O’sul- livan with only two min- utes elapsed.

Will Leahy, Seam-

ie Harnedy and Brian Lawton all had first quar- ter points, while Tadgh OG Murphy and Aaron Myres replied with mi- nors for Sarsfields, who then drew level in strange circumstances as Colm Barry in attempting

to

pass back to goalkeeper Declan Dalton over-hit the pass and it ended up in the net. Jack O’Con- nor followed with a point as Sarsfields led by 1-4 to 1-3 after the opening quarter. Gavin O’Loughlin

who was one of two changes for Sarsfields extended the lead, but points from Leahy and Paudie O’Sullivan had the sides level. By half time Sarsfields were back in front with points from Myres, Daniel Roche and Tadgh OG Murphy,

with John Cronin and Cork minor Ger Miller- ick, who started this time helping Imokilly to stay close as Sarsfields led by 1-8 to 1-7 at the interval. Who could grasp the

straw on the resumption was the big question as Imokilly

introduced

Dan Mangan for the second half and the St Catherine’s man just as he had done the previous night, came up trumps as his presence

added

strength to the Imokilly attack. Seamie Harnedy bagged a goal, Paudie O’Sullivan hit a second, with Leahy and Mangan adding points as Im- okilly led by 3-9 to 1-9 with 20 minutes still to play. Sarsfields were in trouble but the introduc- tion of Liam Healy gave them a lifeline as the mi- nor found the net with his first touch and it was game on again. Paudie O’Sullivan and Myres exchanged points before Harnedy came close to another goal, in the 41st

minute but some strong defending kept him out. The goal did arrive two

minutes later with Har- nedy smashing home a 4th Imokilly goal, followed by a point from Brian Lawton and at the end of the third quarter Imok- illy led by 4-11 to 3-10 as Eoin O’Sullivan kept Sarsfields in touch with a scrambled 45th

minute

goal. Gradually however the Imokilly belief was growing as John Cronin, Niall O’Leary and Ci- aran O’Brien began to take control in the half- back line, while Mark O’Keeffe and Ger Mill- erick powered into the game at midfield. Sarsfields were strug-

gling to contain Imok- illy but another goal of some fortitude came to their rescue as keeper Alan Kennedy came up- field and his long-range delivery ended up in the net and it was back to a two-point

game going

into the final ten minutes. That however was to be

Sarsfields final score and five unanswered points from Lawton, Fleming, Declan Dalton from a 65 and man of the match Seamie Harnedy ensured that Imokilly will be in this year’s final against Blackrock. Because of this win Blackrock will represent Cork in the Munster club champi- onship, but first the ti- tle must be decided this coming Sunday and if Imokilly can play to form then they must be in with a great chance of winning. Imokilly: S Harnedy

2-3, P O’Sullivan 2-3, B Lawton 0-3, W Leahy 0-3, C Fleming, J Cronin, G Millerick, D Mangan and D Dalton 0-1 each. Sarsfields: E O’Sul-

livan, A Kennedy, L Healy and C Barry OG 1-0 each, A Myres 0-4, J O’Connor 0-2, T OG Murphy 0-2, G O’Loughlin and D Ro- che 0-1 each. Imokilly: D Dalton, B O’Tuama, C Barry,

as

they kept the gap at three. Ian Maguire continued to drive St Finbarr’s forward as Sherlock cut the mar- gin to a single point as he slotted a free and then shot over left footed to leave the outcome very much in the balance with three minutes remaining. It was now anybody’s as St

game Finbarr’s

pushed for an equaliser and another superb move

ended with Stephen Sher- lock slotting over to com- plete a remarkable fight back to parity, Could St Finbarr’s conjure up an in- jury time winner or would Nemo hang on for a draw. The answer was the latter as in a welter of excite- ment St Finbarr’s could not conjure up a winner, but after being eight points adrift after twenty minutes, I am sure they would glad- ly have taken a draw.
