Claire McCarthy Is An Inspiration To The Sporting Fraternity With Her Achievements This Year

Aged 41 with 4 chil-

dren ranging in ages from 13 to 2, Claire had an exceptional year high- lighted by representing her country in the World Championships Mara- thon in London last Au- gust and despite picking up an injury during the race by stepping in a pot hole, the

athlete

Ballinhassig finished a very creditable 33rd

92 starters in a time of 2

from from

hours 38 minutes and 26 seconds. On 4th

2,334 entries and only June Claire won

the Cork City Half Mar- athon and three weeks later the Leevale

is ath-

lete ran 74 minutes 35 seconds in winning the Swansea half marathon. What is remarkable

that Claire was a clear winner of both half mar- athons with only 6 male athletes finishing ahead of her in Cork from

12 male athletes finishing ahead of her in Swansea among the 4,866 run- ners who completed the course. Claire had her sights

set on running the Dub- lin City Marathon on the October Bank Holiday but lost over a month’s training due to the inju- ry she sustained in Lon- don. Although a London based Physiotherapist,

Alex Wheatman, came to Claire’s assistance with new technology known as iMed Medical Thera- py System and cured her tendon injury, Claire de- cided not to run another marathon this year. Instead Claire

com-

peted in the 15 miles an- nual Cork to Cobh run on Sunday 1st

and finished over 2 miles ahead of the 2nd

lady athlete. Of the 745

October placed

who finished the event only 8 male athletes fin- ished ahead of Claire who averaged 6 minutes per mile despite strong winds and high humidity. The second placed wom- an was over two miles be- hind Claire at the finish. As a result of Claire’s

increasing reputation a United States com- pany,

National Health

Trends Corporation, that topped the Fortune 100

companies last year and specialises in nutritional products, has decided to sponsor Claire. Claire’s

on running the World Championships

sights are set Half

Marathon in Valentia next March and the Mar- athon at

the European

Championships in Berlin in August. Claire’s ath- letics career is supported by her husband, Martin, a former international

athlete and by her coach, Donie Walsh, a former Olympian. Claire McCarthy, who

achieved a US athletic scholarship to Kentucky in her teenage years, is now achieving her great- est results in running and aptly described as Super Mum by Irish Runner magazine in its summer edition. Next year could well see Claire McCar- thy’s finest hour.
