Saints Come Alive In Second Half To Book County Final Spot

St Catherine’s 3-17 Russell Rovers 2-10

A stern talking to at half

time along with a few po- sitional changes helped St Catherine’s shake off what had been a determined first half challenge from Russell Rovers in what was a repeat of the East Cork Final.

Miserable conditions in

Pairc Ui Rinn on Friday night did not deter these two teams from produc- ing a fiercely contested opening half, that at times threatened to boil over, but

thankfully calm prevailed on a night that

saw St

Catherine’s make the bet- ter start with Dan Mangan and Shane O’Brien shoot- ing them into an early lead. Shane Cotter and Brian Mulcahy also got in on the act with good points, while Josh Beausang got Russell Rovers on the board. The Shanagarry outfit were playing second fiddle but a superb Brian Hartnett goal had the sides level before Josh Beausang gave them

the lead in the 10th minute. St Catherine’s faded a

little as Eoin O’Sullivan, Kieran Walsh and Kevin Tattan

found the range,

and while Shane O’Brien did add two points, a sec- ond well taken goal from Josh Beausang saw Russell Rovers race into a two- goal lead approaching half time. St Catherine’s were in a bit of difficulty but a welcome goal from Rory Galvin in first half stop- page time saw St Cathe- rine’s trail by 2-6 to 1-6 at half time. Whatever was said in

the St Catherine’s dress- ing room at half time had the desired effect as they

emerged a changed side. Dan Mangan was placed at the edge of the square and within a minute of the restart he had the sides level with a smashing goal. A point from Shane Cot- ter followed before Brian Mulcahy fired in a third goal and from being in a precarious position at half time, St Catherine’s were now four points clear with just four minutes gone. Shane O’Brien made it a five-point game, before Josh Beausang got a 42nd minute point for Russell Rovers who by this stage had replaced their whole full back line. The fight- ing spirit they displayed

in the opening half was nowhere to be seen and it was St Catherine’s that extended their advantage with a flurry of points that pushed them into an unas- sailable position. O Brien, Shane Kearney, Mangan, Mulcahy, Shane

now be represented the

Cotter

and sub Pa Roche were all on target before the finish, with just Brian Hartnett and two Josh Beausang points, all that Russell Rov- ers could manage in a sec- ond half fade out. St Catherine’s will now the
